Dedicated to the 60,000 Irish slaves who perished in Barbados, victims of Cromwell's terror campaign in Ireland during the 17th century. When Michael Redferne pulls the body of twenty year old Maureen Kelly from a frozen Irish lake, something tells him he should leave well enough alone. But fear conquers instinct and he hides the frozen corpse in the ice house on Lord Preston’s estate. Unaware that sinister forces in the persons of Lady Preston and her lover are conspiring against him, he walks into a trap and is shipped in chains to Barbados, known as Sugar Island. Once there, Redferne joins thousands of African and Irish laborers who are forced to work in the cane fields from dawn to dusk under the cowhide whips of brutal overseers. The rising and setting sun becomes a doomsday clock, ticking off Redferne’s slow march to the grave. He must escape if he hopes to redeem his past and save his future.

From the Back Cover Seamus Beirne has written a rollicking page-turner, an indelible chronicle of crime and punishment set in the Ireland and Barbados of more than two centuries ago. The novel reads like a mixture of James M. Cain, Alexander Dumas, and John Millington Synge. 'Breakout from Sugar Island' is a dazzling achievement guaranteed to keep readers enraptured until its final, startling pages.-- Peter Duffy, New York Times Contributor and Author

About the Author Seamus Beirne grew up in Ireland and emigrated to the United States at eighteen to study for the priesthood. He spent the next twenty-five years as a high school English teacher and administrator, including a stint as president of the teachers union.Although he had written opinion pieces for the Los Angeles Times and contributed to school newsletters,he never attempted to write fiction until seven years ago. Since that time he's completed three historical novels one of which, Breakout From Sugar Island, was published by Fireship Press in September, 2015. He's received the following awards: Conference Choice Award winner for adult fiction, San Diego Writers Conference, 2010, 2011, and 2012. This is a book that will hook you and provide a front row seat to the cruelty perpetrated by the British on Irish citizens who dared to challenge the ruling class. Shipped from his own country to the sugar fields in the Barbados to be enslaved and dehumanized, Michael Redferne planned his escape with an eventual return to Ireland to reap revenge on those who stole his dignity from him. I found myself stealing away for periods of time to read some more, even taking the book with me in the car on occasions. I felt sad when I finished the 406 pages. I wanted more of the intrigue and adventure. This has to be without a doubt one of the best historical novels I have ever read.

If Seamus Beirne was writing the History textbooks when I was in school, more fascinating accounts of our forebears experiences would be brought to life. Breakout from Sugar Island is a non-stop page turner where I rooted for the tenacious and determined hero and his mates from start to finish. A painful period in Irish history is beautifully and intelligently described by the author, making me want to learn more. A great read!

The hours passed as I followed Michael Redferne's struggle to stay alive from freezing Ireland to slavery in Barbados sugar cane fields. The short chapters made it an easy, exciting read through murders, treacheries, and narrow escapes. Most fascinating was how the darker sides of human nature can make justice prevail. Whether you're Irish or not (and I'm not), this is an excellent read.
