Scotland 1586 An ancient feud threatens Munro’s home, his family, even his life. Munro owes allegiance to the Cunninghames and to the Earl of Glencairn. He escapes the bloody aftermath of a massacre, but cannot escape the disdain of the wife he sought to protect, nor inner conflict, as he wrestles with his conscience, with divided loyalties and, most dangerous of all, a growing friendship with the rival Montgomerie clan. Set against the backdrop of the turmoil of the closing years of the sixteenth century, Turn of the Tide follows the fortunes of a fictional family trapped at the centre of a notorious historic feud. Known as the Ayrshire Vendetta, it began in the 15th century and wasn’t finally resolved until the latter part of the 17th, the Cunninghames and Montgomeries dubbed the ‘Montagues and Capulets’ of Ayrshire. Praise for Margaret Skea – Beryl Bainbridge Best First Time Novelist 2014 ‘Margaret Skea brings sixteenth century Scotland to vivid life in Turn of the Tide. I enjoyed travelling back in time with her.’ Sharon K Penman ‘The quality of the writing and the research were outstanding.’ Jeffrey Archer speaking on the Alan Titchmarsh Show ‘Munro frames the book, in at the initial kill, and centre stage in the brilliant climax, all the more shocking as the conclusion of an otherwise measured tale … a fascinating and engaging read with great visual effect.’ Between the Lines ‘It is hard to know where to begin, there were so many things I liked about Turn of the Tide…an emotionally gripping story about a man caught between duty and conscience at a time in history when a man’s livelihood depended upon his loyalty to family and clan.’ The History Lady ‘I have read some wonderful debut novels this year – Turn of the Tide is one of them. I loved it … a tale of love, loyalty, tragedy and betrayal.’ BooksPlease

Review "I thought the quality of the writing and the research were outstanding." Jeffrey Archer"Very good dialogue, all very seamless. I was at the end before I noticed, which is always a good sign." Penny Smith

From the Author This book is the result of 'a long and winding road' - from my earliest research into the history of feuding clans in South-West Scotland, and the invention of a fictional family to tell their story, through the numerous drafts and edits, until it arrived on the bookshelves in November 2012. I was thrilled to be the Historical fiction Winner in the Harper Collins People's Novelist Competition and delighted when Capercaillie Books offered me a contract to publish it. I hope some of my passion for the period and for the characters will be shared by readers in Scotland and abroad and that I have helped to bring to life a little known period of Scotland's history.

About the Author Margaret Skea grew up in Ulster at the height of the 'Troubles', but now lives with her husband in the Scottish Borders.   A passion for Scotland's turbulent history, the 16th century, and her Ulster-Scots heritage, led to the writing of Turn of the Tide which was the Historical Fiction Winner in the 2011 Harper Collins People's Novelist Competition.   An Hawthornden Fellow and award winning short story writer - her recent credits include, Overall Winner Neil Gunn 2011, Chrysalis Prize 2010, and Winchester Short Story Prize 2009. Shortlisted in the Mslexia Short Story Competition 2012 and a finalist in the 2012 Historical Novel Society Short Story Competition, she has also been long-listed for the Matthew Pritchard Award, Fish Short Story and Fish One Page Prize and published in a range of magazines and anthologies in Britain and the USA.

I found it well researched, well written, informative, entertaining and thoroughly worth reading. Based on a long lasting bloody feud between two clans, the Cunninghames and the Montgomeries, the story begins with a surprise horrific mass killing, one side lying in wait to slaughter the other. This event actually occurred in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1586. The author, by introducing the fictional Munro family in this first chapter, is able to present the incidents that follow through the adventures of Munro, a minor laird, whose connections to both factions move the narrative along. We get wonderful glimpses into daily life in 16th century Scotland—what they ate, clothes they wore, even the children are portrayed in a way that creates a picture in the mind; their antics and worries adding interest and sparkle. The dreadful plight of the poor is made clear when a starving child is caught in the act of stealing a rabbit from the family warren, “... she could see his shoulder blades and hips protruding sharp and angular, his legs stick-thin.” I was grateful for the area map, the main character descriptions, and the short glossary of Scottish words, and used them all repeatedly. I was totally unprepared for the ending. It was perfect! This novel is historical fiction at its best and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre.

Clan Cunningham Review By Lorcán This book published in November 2012, is a masterful achievement in historical fiction that flows not unlike a Scottish burn, with all the undercurrents, subtleties, and smoothness of the finest single malt scotch. And like a wee dram of Laphroig 15 - which the connoisseur does not merely drink, but rather savors as an experience - so is one captivated by the storytelling and intrigue of this novel. This story is expertly woven through just one pleat's worth of tartan fabric if the Cunningham-Montgomery feud were equivalent to a full nine yard kilt; the plot commencing with one of the most momentous events of the feud's duration... which was carried out as another one of the feud's self-perpetuating reprisals. The Clan Cunningham of today is resigned, in the Clan Cunningham of auld's role in this novel, to serve as the villain in this microcosm of time for its hands weren't exactly clean throughout the ordeal. Which does not tarnish an otherwise honourable and esteemed legacy as evidenced over the course of its distinguished history under the leadership of its chiefs, the 15 Earls of Glencairn. One need only peruse the events surrounding the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488 to understand the passionate motivations of retribution which fueled this bitter rivalry with the great power and wealth surrounding the favour of the Scottish crown at stake!A worthy addition to any literary collection, especially of the Scottish and Celtic genre.Bravo, Margaret Skea! After having had interest rekindled in the events during, and surrounding, the Cunningham-Montgomery feud by the reading of this book and its subsequent review published herein, the April 15, 2013, full-color, Clan Cunningham Communiqué international newsletter will likely feature this feud in a much broader scope. This review will also be reprinted and published in our January 15, 2013 issue and distributed to our current members with a world-wide membership of presently 994.Reviewed by Clan Cunningham Chairman, Larry Augsbury, at chairman@clancunningham.us.In spite of the risk to the scandalous Cunningham reputation that a modicum of magnanimity might do, Clan Cunningham recommends this book to all Cunninghams and our ilk.

Parsons History and historical fiction set in Scotland does not often get attention in the literary world. Turn of the Tide is a magnificently rewarding tale, that puts the reader smack into this less familiar world.Margaret Skea provides a richly researched, evocatively described, story of the feud between two Scottish clans, the Cunninghams and the Montgomeries, in the time of King James. In a time when people deemed honor, loyalty, and pledges of both, higher and deeper at times more than life and family, Munro must decide where his allegiance and his heart really truly lie. This is not a story about the kings and who rules the nation. It is the story of other folk, for whom family is sometimes subsumed in the need to recover and keep honor intact. And sometimes family--spouse and child--is worth more. The language of the glens, the hills and forests of the land, the descriptions of the great houses, barns, taverns--the sounds and smells of food, sweat, or blood, the fear of being discovered--all make this story worth the reading. The reader will feel a part of the events, and will come to know the characters closely. This is a book to re-read, recommend to friends, libraries, bookstores, and re-read again.Highly recommended.

PDF Ebook The Last Kingdom tie-in (Saxon Tales), by Bernard Cornwell

The first installment of Bernard Cornwell’s bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit BBC America television series.

This is the exciting—yet little known—story of the making of England in the 9th and 10th centuries, the years in which King Alfred the Great, his son and grandson defeated the Danish Vikings who had invaded and occupied three of England’s four kingdoms.

The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex (Alfred’s kingdom and the last territory in English hands) Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane. He certainly has no love for Alfred, whom he considers a pious weakling and no match for Viking savagery, yet when Alfred unexpectedly defeats the Danes and the Danes themselves turn on Uhtred, he is finally forced to choose sides. By now he is a young man, in love, trained to fight and ready to take his place in the dreaded shield wall. Above all, though, he wishes to recover his father’s land, the enchanting fort of Bebbanburg by the wild northern sea.

This thrilling adventure—based on existing records of Bernard Cornwell’s ancestors—depicts a time when law and order were ripped violently apart by a pagan assault on Christian England, an assault that came very close to destroying England.

The Last Kingdom tie-in (Saxon Tales), by Bernard Cornwell

From Publishers Weekly Bestseller Cornwell leaps back a millennium from his Richard Sharpe series to tell of the consolidation of England in the late ninth century and the role played by a young (fictional) warrior-in-training who's at the center of the war between Christian Englishmen and the pagan Danes. (Most of the other principal characters—Ubba, Guthrum, Ivar the Boneless and the like—are real historical figures.) Young Uhtred, who's English, falls under the control of Viking über-warrior Ragnar the Fearless when the Dane wipes out Uhtred's Northumberland family. Cornwell liberally feeds readers history and nuggets of battle data and customs, with Uhtred's first-person wonderment spinning all into a colorful journey of (self-)discovery. In a series of episodes, Ragnar conquers three of England's four kingdoms. The juiciest segment has King Edmund of East Anglia rebuking the Viking pagans and demanding that they convert to Christianity if they intend to remain in England. After Edmund cites the example of St. Sebastian, the Danes oblige him by turning him into a latter-day Sebastian and sending him off to heaven. Uhtred's affection for Ragnar as a surrogate father grows, and he surpasses the conqueror's blood sons in valor. When father and adopted son arrive at the fourth and last kingdom, however, the Danes meet unexpected resistance and Uhtred faces personal and familial challenges, as well as a crisis of national allegiance. This is a solid adventure by a crackling good storyteller. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist An acknowledged master of rousing battlefield fiction as evidenced by his crackling Richard Sharpe series, Cornwell also deserves praise for his mesmerizing narrative finesse and his authentic historical detailing. Here he introduces a new multivolume saga set in medieval England prior to the unification of the four Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria, East Anglia, Mercia, and Wessex. Weakened by civil war, Northumbria is invaded by the fearless Danes, and Uhtred, the rightful heir to the earldom of Bebbanburg, is captured by the enemy. Raised as a Viking warrior by Ragnar the Terrible, his beloved surrogate father, Uhtred is still torn by an innate desire to reclaim his birthright. Fighting as a Dane but realizing that his ultimate destiny lies along another path, he seizes the opportunity to serve Alfred, king of Wessex, after Ragnar is horribly betrayed and murdered by Kjartan, a fellow Dane. Ever watchful and ever practical, Uhtred awaits his chance to settle the blood feud with Kjartan and to seize Bebbanburg from his treacherous uncle. Leaving his hero suspended on the threshold of realizing his desires, Cornwell masterfully sets up his audience for the second volume in this irresistible epic adventure. Review “Intoxicating….Thrilling….Cornwell conveys the disquiet of change and the melancholy of extinction as few historical novelists manage to.” (Washington Post Book World)“Enter Cornwell’s vividly drawn ninth-century Kingdom … after this dip into the Dark Ages, we want to go back.” (Entertainment Weekly)“Enthralling ... the desperate, heroic struggle of Alfred “the Great” ... against the seemingly invincible Vikings. (Wall Street Journal)“History comes alive.” (Boston Globe)“A crackling good storyteller.” (Publishers Weekly)“Cornwell .... makes the usually gloomy ninth century sound like a hell of a lot of fun.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Highly recommended … another great historical series in the making.” (Library Journal (starred review))“Masterful....[An]irresistible epic adventure....Cornwell deserves praise for his mesmerizing narrative finesse and his authentic historical detailing.” (Booklist)

Uhtred, the son of an Earl becomes an orphan at ten and is captured and adopted by Ragnar the Dane. He is taught the Viking ways and Ragnar becomes more a father to him than his own father ever was. He loves the unrestricted, impious ways of the Danes and learns to become a formidable warrior.King Alfred, (later known as "The Great") is portrayed as an over pious but clever King of Essex. While Alfred is not a well-liked King, he is an intelligent one and soon comes to bind Uhtred to his cause against the Danes. The brutally descriptive battle scenes are exciting and repellant at the same time. Battles and wars are not described here as glorious and heroic circumstances but as what they really were, brutal, bloody, and often times fatal. This title was an excellent read and I just couldn't put it down many times at night. I've read it until the wee hours of the morning. I believe this is the best BC title I have ever read to date, even though I haven't read any of the Sharpe's novels (that era and place settings are not of interest to me). I highly recommend this novel to anyone interested in early English (Saxon) history and/or Alfred the Great (and in the upcoming series, his descendants).

83 of 88 people found the following review helpful. my favorite of all By a reader I've read almost all the Cornwell books: the Sharpe series, Civil War series, the archer, and King Arthur--only the 2 or 3 individual novels have been missed. This is my favorite so far. It is similar to the King Arthur books but with less of the mysticism and magic. The hero is a spunky boy who amuses a Viking chief during a battle and is adopted; the Norse life proves to be more suited to his taste and he grows up as a Dane. However, some old business brings him back to the English side. I won't tell more but any lover of historical fiction will find it hard to put this book down.

87 of 94 people found the following review helpful. Cornwell is a master of the historical novel By Jerry Saperstein Just a few moments ago, I was writing a review of one of Cornwell's American Civil War novels. Now I am writing a review of this Cornwell novel about 9th Century England. That's how good a historical novelist Cornwell is: the era doesn't matter. Cornwell weaves fact and fiction together seamlessly, believably and in a way sure to engage the reader's interest. The year is 866 A.D. The island is not yet united and the Danes raid and conquer at will. Cornwell's device is Uhtred, the 10 year old son of a minor chieftain, who is taken by the Danes, raised in the Viking ways of war and accepted as a Viking warrior. A priest becomes the medium through which the boy grows into a man and meets Alfred, the King who will take the first major steps in uniting England. Cornwell's story is well plotted, his characters are delightfully rich and his history both interesting and fascinating. A wonderful read.Jerry

By Reece Hasson This is by far the best introductory book on chess that I've ever read. Almost every book I've read expects you to arrive at some understanding of the game by stepping through one game after another but this book gives you a holistic view of the game. There us \a lot of easy to understand chess wisdom packed in almost every chapter.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good for those that know close to nothing about chess By PinkRabbit I got this e-book for free from the Seller so I could evaluate it and give a review. I am not a proficient chess player. I know the names of the pieces and how they move but as far as strategy goes, I am a complete zero. Most of the one star reviews on here were given by self proclaimed expert level players and they trashed the book. But speaking as a newbie I learned a lot of stuff I did not know and found the book to be very interesting and helpful. I can know look at a board and not be completely lost. I know how to read moves now and even memorized a few opening moves. For me, a beginner this was a good book and just because I got it for free does not make my opinion tainted. This is how I really feel. If you get it and pay $2.99 and think you got ripped off, then just get a refund!

Dedicated to the 60,000 Irish slaves who perished in Barbados, victims of Cromwell's terror campaign in Ireland during the 17th century. When Michael Redferne pulls the body of twenty year old Maureen Kelly from a frozen Irish lake, something tells him he should leave well enough alone. But fear conquers instinct and he hides the frozen corpse in the ice house on Lord Preston’s estate. Unaware that sinister forces in the persons of Lady Preston and her lover are conspiring against him, he walks into a trap and is shipped in chains to Barbados, known as Sugar Island. Once there, Redferne joins thousands of African and Irish laborers who are forced to work in the cane fields from dawn to dusk under the cowhide whips of brutal overseers. The rising and setting sun becomes a doomsday clock, ticking off Redferne’s slow march to the grave. He must escape if he hopes to redeem his past and save his future.

Breakout from Sugar Island, by Seamus Beirne

From the Back Cover Seamus Beirne has written a rollicking page-turner, an indelible chronicle of crime and punishment set in the Ireland and Barbados of more than two centuries ago. The novel reads like a mixture of James M. Cain, Alexander Dumas, and John Millington Synge. 'Breakout from Sugar Island' is a dazzling achievement guaranteed to keep readers enraptured until its final, startling pages.-- Peter Duffy, New York Times Contributor and Author

About the Author Seamus Beirne grew up in Ireland and emigrated to the United States at eighteen to study for the priesthood. After ordination he went to Southern California to teach Latin and English in a Catholic high school. Things happened fast after that: he earned an M.A. in English, met his future wife, left the priesthood, got his first Social Security card, got married, and had three children. He spent the next twenty-five years as a high school English teacher and administrator, including a stint as president of the teachers union.Although he had written opinion pieces for the Los Angeles Times and contributed to school newsletters,he never attempted to write fiction until seven years ago. Since that time he's completed three historical novels one of which, Breakout From Sugar Island, was published by Fireship Press in September, 2015. He's received the following awards: Conference Choice Award winner for adult fiction, San Diego Writers Conference, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Runner-up for adult fiction, San Francisco Writers Conference, 2010. Finalist in the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Conference, 2011.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read By Amazon Customer This was a great read for me. This is a book that will hook you and provide a front row seat to the cruelty perpetrated by the British on Irish citizens who dared to challenge the ruling class. Shipped from his own country to the sugar fields in the Barbados to be enslaved and dehumanized, Michael Redferne planned his escape with an eventual return to Ireland to reap revenge on those who stole his dignity from him. I found myself stealing away for periods of time to read some more, even taking the book with me in the car on occasions. I felt sad when I finished the 406 pages. I wanted more of the intrigue and adventure. This has to be without a doubt one of the best historical novels I have ever read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A non-stop page turner! By Karyn Rashoff What a book! If Seamus Beirne was writing the History textbooks when I was in school, more fascinating accounts of our forebears experiences would be brought to life. Breakout from Sugar Island is a non-stop page turner where I rooted for the tenacious and determined hero and his mates from start to finish. A painful period in Irish history is beautifully and intelligently described by the author, making me want to learn more. A great read!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great, compelling page turner By John On a 13 hour flight to Rome, this very well written story kept me company. The hours passed as I followed Michael Redferne's struggle to stay alive from freezing Ireland to slavery in Barbados sugar cane fields. The short chapters made it an easy, exciting read through murders, treacheries, and narrow escapes. Most fascinating was how the darker sides of human nature can make justice prevail. Whether you're Irish or not (and I'm not), this is an excellent read.

Feel better about yourself, help to achieve your goals and similar. That’s what you’ll learn from this book.Ten short but to the point chapters covering the entire technique and how to go about practicing same every day. All succinctly explained with examples and practice exercises to help you get it down pat. What I found particularly helpful was that the author doesn’t leave you hanging after explaining the theory behind it all. Theory is one thing, being able to then put what you have learned in to practice is another. Here’s where the author comes to the recuse by including for you a “Law of Attraction Journal” which you can use to record what steps you are taking each day to practice the techniques.

Olson Jr. I read this book on my Kindle as the one free book I borrow for each month from the Kindle lending libraryAs a retired Army colonel who served 30 years with 13 years overseas including a tour in Vietnam followed by teaching high school history for 13 years, I feel qualified in criticizing this slim general survey of military commanders throughout history. The book is marred by numerous errors which reflect poor editing or lack of knowledge on the part of the author. For example, Pyrrhus lived 319 - 272 B.C., but dates of 75 and 81 B.C. are used to date battles in which he fought. In the section devoted to Hannibal (one of my all-time favorite generals), the author describes "Spanish hill tribesmen armed with deadly yet distinctive short shorts." Perhaps, the author is referring to the clothing worn by overweight people to Walmart. Such a sight would have seared the eyes of Hannibal's opponents. In the section on Charlemagne, the author failed to mention that Charles the Great was also the grandson of Charles Martel.Concluding the section on Genghis Khan, the author states, "His grandson Kublai Khan would later realize his dream in the conquest of the Song Chinese, as well as invasions of Japan..." While technically true, the invasions were not successful. The term "janissaries" was not clearly defined in the discussion of Suleiman the Magnificent. I knew that they were generally shock troopers recruited from young men who had been forcibly converted from Christianity to Islam. One of the most egregious errors was describing the 1755 battle at Monongahela as a British victory. It was a debacle for the British. And, the French and Indian War did end in 1758. It ended in 1763.The author missed an opportunity to add to Admiral Nelson's stature by failing to include how the expression "turning a blind eye" came into being at the Battle of Copenhagen.I could go on but will end with the author's comment that Jackson quit the Army in 1851 "to attend Virginia Military Institute." Jackson graduated from West Point. He left the Army to teach at VMI.On a positive note, the author did give a succinct and accurate description of Patton. I only wish he had done so well for others. The book lacked maps and references.I could not recommend this survey of military commanders to anyone.

No rationale or criteria are given. Most of the selections are standard, a few are dubious: Darius III (whose greatest accomplishment was losing to Alexander) and Bernard Montgomery (Market Garden) are perhaps the most unusual selections. The inclusion of Patton, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson reflect an American bias. Stonewall Jackson was successful in small engagements against fourth-rate Union generals during his short career, but his accomplishments are dwarfed by those of Frederick the Great, who was not included. David Farragut's daring and brilliant seizure of New Orleans had far greater impact on the outcome of the war than Jackson's Valley Campaign. And why select Patton over Eisenhower, who bore the overall responsibility for the success of the Normandy invasion? The greatest value of this short book is probably in introducing Western readers to Yi Sun-Sin, Oda Nobunaga and Khalid ibn Walid.

The author discussed each commander in a concise and straightforward manner, which was okay. I'm familiar with some of these military commanders but there are some I've only read about here so it was great knowing about them. I would want to watch a movie about these other commanders.
