How great would that be if we had a "blueprint" for Muslims to homeschool their children in line with Islamic teaching? With interest in homeschooling swelling across the Muslim world, The Muslim Family Guide to Islamic Homeschooling is a gift to the homeschooling household. If we look through the Islamic seerah, homeschooling is really nothing new. We often read of the Sahabah youth being around adults, learning by their sides, the younger teaching their elders what they know and being trained for tasks beyond their years. Usamah bin Zayd (RA), for example, led political expeditions in his teenage years. Aishah bint Abu Bakr (RA) documented details of the Prophet's (SAW) life to memory, only to educate generations of Muslims to come. Ali bin Abi Talib (RA) was a recognised warrior by the Prophet himself and one of the most iconic Muslim youth of all times. Anas bin Malik (RA) also worked alongside Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and built his strong character of integrity by being around the Apostle of Allah. However, homeschooling isn't necessarily for the fainthearted, and Sister Jamila is upfront about it. Homeschooling is rewarding but is certainly a lot of hard work. Being with the kids 24 hours a day, tasked with the responsibility to be the main educational provider over and beyond any institution, is a huge step for any family. It requires commitment, dedication, sacrifices, as well as the innate yearning to please Allah (SWT). Yet when many Muslim families hit the internet running, in a dire search for Muslim material, they tend to find resources for Christian homeschoolers. Though there are many similarities between the families of different faiths, Sister Jamila speaks directly to her readers about how and what it entails to turn a Muslim homeschooling family into one that is very Islamically inclined.Firstly, she addresses homeschooling with brutal honesty. There are a myriad of reasons as to why a Muslim family would homeschool. And as much as we are different from each other, we are also very bound by the covenant to please Allah (SWT). There will be many times for new homeschoolers, as well as homeschooling veterans, when moments of doubt creep into their minds, and Sister Jamila lists out how normal it all is - included is a list of du'as that will help extinguish any fear and doubt that is holding us back from our route to raising our children as pious and educated Muslims. Actually, at the end of the book, she even lists out the alternative position of using public school, and this too is addressed with blatant honesty - the pros, the cons, and all of the possible outcomes of having children go through either system.Jamila talks a lot about her experience as a mother of multi-aged children, and how she has made mistakes, yet learned through them - working on the kinks and celebrating their successes. Every homeschooler should be aware that the road of homeschooling is not a linear one, and there will be bumps and lumps along the way, some T-junctions and sometimes even U-turns. Yet, she says, it's a fulfilling one where a parent can cultivate that important relationship with his or her children and learn that lost art of operating as a cohesive family that is focused on pleasing Allah (SWT).But the icing on this delicious cake is the Unit Studies that Jamila has incorporated into this book. It's not just about the ideas of the Unit Studies (which are really quite brilliant on their own), but how they are so well linked with the Qur'anic descriptions and injunctions that are relevant to the topic. What a great reference for Muslim homeschoolers to hone in on Qur'an-centric education, and even more so - what a great incentive for Muslim homeschoolers to indulge in the Qur'an in such an explorative manner and to impart the same curiosity and love for the Holy Scripture upon our children.Homeschooling opens many avenues for families to explore options over and beyond a cookie cutter curriculum, and this book exemplifies just that. There are many factors to consider, whether you're just starting out on the homeschooling journey, or if you're in the middle of it; it is good to have a voice of brutal honesty when it comes to taking the plunge into this important avenue, especially when we are striving to make Islam the heart of education.Maria Zain thought long and hard about starting her homeschooling journey four years back. But with Muslim homeschoolers around the globe increasing, she truly believes in a customised-education for each of her children and hopes to see them through to their teenage years.

Well, this book did just that, it allowed an inside look at many different families with their own dynamics. I enjoyed reading about the experience that parents had with older kids, since my children are still young. The book is filled with real life experiences and lots of practical advice. A must have for parents with young children so that they can benefit from the advice of parents who have already dealt with the changes that puberty may bring. Even parents who don't homeschool should get this book and read the chapter about dealing with teens and pros and cons of public school. Great book. I love it!

Full of inspiration on the challenges and rewards of raising and teaching our children in a wholesome Muslim household. She includes beautiful dua to say for our children and ourselves as a reminder that Allah is in control of everything. The author states the essence of her book in the following statement: "I have no regrets. I believe, as many of the other homeschool mothers have said, that all the things you give up mean nothing compared to your child's education and Islamic upbringing."I highly recommend this book to all parents considering or already homeschooling their kids and in need of encouragement.
