GRE for Dummies 7th or 8th editions are both good books; both cover the revised GRE exam By 2015 GRE Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to be thorough. When preparing for the GRE, no one source should be used by itself. GRE for Dummies 7th or 8th editions are both good books; both cover the revised GRE exam.I'm taking the GRE later this year. By the way, I signed up on May 19, 2015 for a late October exam date (in my city). All of September was taken, almost all of October was taken, the first half of November was taken, and a good part of December was taken. Register early! Many PhD programs I will apply to have December 1, 2015 application dates for a fall 2016 start date. According to ETS, it takes upwards of 10-15 business days (Mon-Fri, not weekends) for schools to get your test results. Know your college-application dates, and strategize for the best registration date (well in advance).I am taking 5½ months to prepare for my exam. I am using an online service (that hosts practice tests, videos, and so forth. It is very helpful, but (in my humble opinion) incomplete.I am using GRE for Dummies, 7th Edition. This book succeeds, where the aforementioned online service fails, in describing EXACTLY what to expect on the exam (e.g. the breakdown of the questions, how to prepare mentally & physically for the big day, what is not allowed to be taken to the testing center (e.g. ETS provides a locker, but you cannot bring vocabulary flash cards and cram during the 10 min break they provide), and so forth. The exam is $195. At this price, you want to be absolutely certain you know what you are getting into; GRE for Dummies provides you the detail that other sources may not. For current and recent college students, if you still have access to your university's library database, search for an eBook of GRE for dummies (7th of 8th edition). The public library, where you live, may carry a hard or digital copy of the book. Look into it before buying a copy; the cost of the exam is hefty enough. To reiterate, do not use one source for exam prep. You will, at the very least, be left with MANY questions. Uncertainty destroys confidence. A lack of confidence leads to poor exam performance. I am using the online service, a commercial/instructional DVD series, a few eBooks (GRE for Dummies, GRE Demystified, Manhattan 5LB book, The Least You Should Know about Vocabulary Building - Word Roots, and tidbits of other books), ETS prep materials, and some other material. I'm aiming for an AWA composite of 5.3 (out of 6.0), and a verbal/quantitative of 328 or better. I certainly would not rely on one source to meet these goals. Make no doubt about it, this is a difficult, marathon-like exam (4½ hours), and rarely are people highly skilled in each component of it (essay writing, verbal, and quantitative).During my Master of Education program, I learned the following holds true for anything we do (as students: paper/dissertation writers and exam takers)....Needs Analysis ==> Strategic Planning ==> Strategic Implementation ==> AssessmentGRE for Dummies has a great tip: "Knowledge, skills, preparation, and practice are the four components for scoring well on any test, andthe GRE is no different."Knowledge is what we already know (skills are included). Intelligence is our ability to learn. Preparation and practice are needed to build knowledge. I think knowledge, preparation (of gaps discovered in the needs analysis), and practice of said gaps (for scoring well) is a better statement. You must know what you are lacking (knowledge and skills are what we know and don't know; i.e. needs analysis). Strategic planning involves finding the resources you need to fill knowledge gaps, and the strategizing a plan to meet your time line for the exam. This phase is preparation. Strategic implementation (i.e. practice, practice, practice!) will take a great deal of time. Assessment will involve your assessing your needs analysis compared to where you are at this point; i.e. did you meet your objectives? If you did, feel good about taking the GRE. If not, fill in remaining gaps.Good luck to all who must take this exam; it's a big investment (of time, money, energy, and so forth). Be well prepared (even if that means taking an additional year to prepare for this exam, and starting your graduate program one year late).Final note: Never compete with anyone else (when it comes to exam scores). Your objective is to meet your goal, and in the time you planned to do it in. Never let anyone tell you something isn't worth investigating until you deemed it of little or no use to you. GRE for Dummies is no different. There is great information to help build confidence, supplement your learning, and (with luck) score better on your exam.

GRE For Dummies is a good book to get if you're happy with an average score or you don't have much time to work on the test, but this is not a great choice for people who want competitive scores. There is plenty of good advice in the book about the test, the math, and the essays. But due to the book's length, it will get you familiar with things but probably not actually get you to MASTER those things. If you want a high score, you want mastery, not just familiarity. The practice question and passage difficulty / complexity and the robustness of verbal techniques leave something to be desired. Real GRE questions are harder and more complex than the ones in this book. The technique in this book may work well with its practice questions, but success with real GRE questions will demand better technique and flexibility.I'd recommend the Manhattan GRE series over this book, unless you really don't have that much time to work on the test. Hopefully you do, since for most people, getting ready for the GRE is not as easy as this book would have you believe. In the experience of most of my students, they need much more than a "refresher".

I felt equips even after only having 3 weeks to prepare. Where the product falls short is the online resource. Test attempts are not available for access at a later time and some of the questions had conflicting and answers and explanations. The book alone is worth the time. I would choose a different online practice next time.
