A fine-art book of photographs and stories culled from 10 years of road trips through remote areas of Greece.  Daily Bread offers a a fresh look at Greece while presenting a new kind of storytelling.  The Greek story has been much in the news but Daily Bread presents a Greece instead with real people plucked from rural villages. Determined to break the stereotype of  news stories publicizing only the economic crisis, photographer/storyteller Beatrice Hamblett, brings a multitude of voices to her work. The reader will meet farmers, bakers, fisherman people living simple lives in small villages held together by family and traditions. You will meet Litza, a young woman who rises at 4 a.m. daily to open her bakery in a mountain village near Albania. Elias will come to life, a handsome, rugged man living alone with his herd of 500 sheep above the meadows of Kato Pedina. The faces of Takis and Riko, a sheep farmer and his Albanian assistant, will speak of the toils of milking and tending animals, year in and year out. In both her photographs and stories, Hamblett reaches for the moments that distill the essence of character and occasion, moments that celebrate the ancient traditions, the love of family,  the courage and dignity of a people as they embrace the 21st century.

Daily Bread Stories from Rural Greece, by Beatrice Hamblett

Review Beatrice Hamblett is an old-style roving photographer perfectly willing to take the time necessary to get the shot she wants. She travels great distances, more often than not by herself, to offer the rest of us her vision of a world that has existed for centuries yet remains on the cusp of modernity. Daily Bread's cover gives only the barest hint of what is to be found inside: a realm most of us will never be fortunate (or daring) enough to explore. Leafing through Daily Bread is a delight. Flip the pages quickly to get an overview, then start again, slowly this time, to discover a brave old world of enduring values and traditions. This is a singular book, a labor of love, and Hamblett's devotion to her craft shines on every page. --Thierry Sagnier, writerIn Daily Bread, the author takes us not just on road trips but mountain trips deep into remote areas where she creates one-of-a-kind photographs that promote the wonders and beauty of Greece. She has exposed even Greeks to these areas like Epirus, a mountainous region of the northwest, that many of us do not know. The vernacular architecture, too, which she photographs was something to be forgotten. She has brought international attention to the master craftsmen who constructed the stone villages throughout Epirus and also to their unique history. We are all very grateful for her efforts. --Zoe Kosmidou, PH.D.The writer's narratives are so compelling. All the stories, both words and images, flow together beautifully. I really felt I was there on the road trips. I came away with such a wonderful feeling of people and place, an affirmation of life. --Carol Barsha, Painter

About the Author Beatrice Hamblett lives and works in Washington, DC and Skopelos, Greece. In the last 15 years, she has exhibited her photographs extensively both nationally and internationally. In July 2009, she was the recipient of a grant from Washington DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) that helped make possible many of the photographs in Daily Bread. Her work has been featured in Athens News, Athens Voice, Washington Post, as well as in numerous other magazines, newspapers, and websites. Her photographs are included in the publication Spells for Forgetting, a collection of photographs from Leptokaria, Greece (2012), as well as in the U.S. Federal Reserve Board Art Collection. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Writing from Columbia University, New York, NY. All the photographs in Daily Bread were shot with a Hasselblad medium-format film camera and developed and printed by the artist.

At least 10 years of slogging expeditions through the mountainous region of north western Greece, often by foot and carrying dozens of pounds of gear. In her earlier work, Beatrice walked and motorcycled the islands and mainland, fascinated by the old, rustic architecture.Later she became curious about the people who made those farm shed/houses. She developed rapport with some pretty earthy farm people, and knows the story of each one. Incidentally, with a masters in writing from Columbia/NY, she kept diaries of her encounters and impressions. I found these stories fascinating (although her travels drive me nuts).I urged her to publish some, and a few stories made it into this book. Despite my own fears, I hope Bea continues to see and show what the rest of us should learn to understand. I seem to walk through life in my own head. Bea shows me things around me that I would never have seen otherwise. If you look at each photograph for a while, thinking of these images and thinking about the media version of events in that country, I hope the book makes you question what you read.As their crisis unfolds, many people are moving back to the countryside to pick up and learn how to fend for themselves, growing their own food, rebuilding old communities and villages. The people have a sense of civilization that we could use to learn. The music and dancing has no age boundaries -- you will always see grandparents and toddlers and everyone in between at these events. Everyone knows the words to the songs. Everyone dances. These people might not have the latest technology, but they can certainly teach us something about the way to live. When safely home at our house on Skopelos, or in Washington DC, Bea develops and prints her photographs. Over the past 30+ years, she has become a master printer, and all the works you will see in the book, are hand made. I think the only digital devices used in her process are -- well actually, I can't think of any. She does listen to music on her iPhone or little iPod and we interact through FaceTime. Everything else, from film loading to developing, to printing to mounting and framing, she performs herself by hand. She is a medium format photographer, which means her gear is heavy. She insists on backpacking, trekking and shooting, carrying this stuff, all by herself. This is true despite being integrated into the european photo scene.I think Bea captures images of people living a different kind of life. Please support her efforts, and in return, be ready to learn and enjoy.

THE COMMONPLACE MADE WONDERFUL By Amazon Customer The photos in this book achieve the remarkable feat of clearly being rooted in our own age, while at the same time opening a door into an ancient past. I don't know how she does, but Beatrice Hamblett makes gives her surfaces a dimensionality that captures a way of life that has existed for millenia and still remains vitally alive to this moment. I guess you could say that she has captured with her lens both space and time---and that makes the images resonate with meaning beyond the objects and people shown. And if that weren't enough, Hamblett writes with with clarity and wit. All in all, the book is a marvel. You may not know it yet, but you need to see this book---in the fullest sense of the word "see."

As I turned each page I was drawn deeper into this amazing world and with each page I became more spellbound... as I stepped into the warm light of Greece. This book is truly eye candy for the soul. A MUST READ!

When Owen Whelan revealed his secret, he was set free from a haunting past and an uncertain future for his son, Ennis. However, in order to know the true depths of his heart, first we must follow him all the way back to a dirt road on a chilly and bitter spring dawn in Ireland. Behind the locked doors of his memories and hidden beneath shame, hunger and eventually escape, we learn the true meaning of the proverb, “There’s hope from the ocean but none from the grave.” Owen’s journey will teach him that sometimes you have to cross that ocean not only to survive but to finally find love, life and become the man worthy of your own admiration and respect. There are turning points in life you cannot come back from but if you’re brave enough, you can begin again.

Review STORY TELLING AT IT'S ULTIMATE BEST!By Thomas P. Riddell for The Writers Lounge on June 3, 2014PS Bartlett shines in this book, just as she did when she wrote Fireflies. There are times when we will read books and we'll look forward to finishing them to see how the story ends. As I read Hope From The Ocean, I found myself so enchanted with the story and its characters that I wanted the story to go on forever. Everything from the descriptions and dialect of the historical time period, to the wonderful love story that develops will have you craving more from this author.

About the Author Award winning author, P.S. Bartlett, was born on Valentine's Day many moons ago in South Baltimore, Maryland, less than a mile from Fort McHenry and Federal Hill. Her first novel, "Fireflies," was published with GMTA Publishing in 2013 and the prequel to "Fireflies," entitled "Hope From the Ocean," was published in March of 2014. She loves history and historical fiction. She gets her history fix via movies, television and of course, books although she enjoys reading almost every genre. Her motto is:"I'm taking a fantastic voyage. Won't you join me?"

Riddell As a prequel to the authors first book, Fireflies, this book will give you more than a glimpse into Owen's past and it will explain a lot about the boy behind the man- as he grew up in Ireland. It gives us insight into the relationships that he had with his brother Dillion and also describes in-depth his relationships with his Uncle Dan and his family. In order to capture the full story I would suggest reading Fireflies first but it's not necessary as the story line will flow smoothly in whatever order you read them.PS Bartlett shines in this book, just as she did when she wrote Fireflies. There are times when we will read books and we'll look forward to finishing them to see how the story ends. As I read Hope From The Ocean, I found myself so enchanted with the story and its characters that I wanted the story to go on forever. The characters are so well developed it's hard for me to imagine that they are not real. They literally come off the page and live right there beside you as you read. This is story telling at its ultimate best and this one, along with Fireflies, should not be passed over. Everything from the descriptions and dialect of the historical time period, to the wonderful love story that develops will have you craving more from this author.I hope we have not heard the end of this story. It should continue...

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Suspenseful and Wonderful! By Jacqueline Klueh Hope from the Ocean written by P.S. Bartlett is a riveting read. It is the prequel to her first novel Fireflies. The story takes place between America and Ireland. The father Own Whelan returns to Ireland to face his past, thus the great title Hope from the Ocean. The story includes vivid detail of every nuance from clothing, to location, even the food. It is necessary read for people that have read Fireflies. I cannot imagine not reading this book if you have read the first, I have not read the first and I plan to go out immediately and get it. The story is suspenseful and from what I can tell, it provides more detail (backstory) about Ennis the son and the father Owen. It does end with just enough missing information that I am sure will lead to a third book – I hope so! I felt sad, happy, scared, and most of all intrigued while reading this book. It is well written and flows quickly. I love a good suspense and this is it. If you like Tana French, I think you will like P.S. Bartlett

It is about Owen Wheelan’s past and how he grew up. It is basically the back story of Fireflies. It helps explain things that happened in FIreflies a little more clearly. Plus, you get a glimpse of Own growing up.I personally loved this book. I feel like it filled in all the gaps that Fireflies had for the background story very nicely. It was beautifully written and very deep.I personally found nothing wrong with this book. If anything, I found an author that can be added to my list of favorites. I can’t wait to read more books by her. She has some incredible talent!I fully recommend this book. I especially recommend it to anybody who read and enjoyed Fireflies. I can personally promise that you will not regret it. I am glad I got to read this book!

Conversations about race can be confusing, contentious, and frightening, particularly for White people. Even just asking questions about race can be scary because we are afraid of what our questions might reveal about our ignorance or bias. Raising Race Questions invites teachers to use inquiry as a way to develop sustained engagement with challenging racial questions and to do so in community so that they learn how common their questions actually are. It lays out both a process for getting to questions that lead to growth and change, as well as a vision for where engagement with race questions might lead. Race questions are not meant to lead us into a quagmire of guilt, discomfort, or isolation. Sustained race inquiry is meant to lead to anti-racist classrooms, positive racial identities, and a restoration of the wholeness of spirit and community that racism undermines.

Book Features:

  • Case studies of expert and experienced White teachers who still have questions about race.
  • Approaches for talking about race in the K–12 classroom.
  • Strategies for facilitating race conversations among adults.
  • A variety of different resources useful in the teacher inquiry groups described in the book.
  • Research with teachers, not on teachers, including written responses from each teacher whose classroom is featured in the book.

“In Raising Race Questions Ali Michael is an excavator, determined to dig into every unexplored crevice of White teachers’ experiences with race in order to unearth the complex realities of racism and schooling, and a model of reflective inquiry, willing to lay herself and her assumptions bare in service to the reader's consciousness and her own. This book grew my consciousness in multiple ways, and that is the greatest gift an author can give me.”—Paul Gorski, founder, EdChange, associate professor, George Mason University

“Ali Michael has a gift for getting people talking. This must-read book captures her ‘magic’ and shares useful strategies for teachers and schools working to develop their racial proficiency. As a White teacher engaged in this work, I've watched these tools help educators support one another as they make mistakes, reflect, and grow together.”—Lynn Eckerman, Teacher, Independence Charter School, Philadelphia, PA

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Immensely helpful, and not just for classroom teachers By Matthew Brown Though my classroom teaching days are long in my past (at least for now), I thoroughly I enjoyed reading Raising Race Questions. The book was fascinating for me, both in its narrowest focus on the potential of white teachers to create an anti-racist classroom, and in many other ways. The way I’m describing the book to friends, family and colleagues is that it focuses on race in the classroom but it’s also an excellent entry point (especially for white people) for overall issues of race and social justice and how we can do a better job of talking about and engaging with these issues and realities. There’s a ton in the book that is relevant to my (non-classroom) workplace, and wherever in my career and life I practice anti-racism, diversity and conflict transformation. And it’s given me lots of ideas about facilitation, training and dialogue. I also have to mention how helpful Ali Michael's honesty and personal experiences are throughout the book, and how inspirational it is that on every page she walks her talk about supporting (not shutting down) people who are trying; about placing the burden of learning on white people (i.e., we shouldn’t expect people of color to teach us everything); and about the crucial distinction between intention and impact. Finally, kudos for expressing a lot of complex ideas in language that is accessible to the non-specialist!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A powerful, welcoming and supportive invitation By E. Bartoli This book is a must read, and not just for teachers, but for anyone interested in better understanding and engaging in race conversations. The book is beautifully laid out, it is a very smooth/easy read, and it is surprisingly rich for both novice and more expert readers on the topic. Of the many books I read on race (as a white person), this is one of the most openly non-judgmental; every sentence feels like an invitation (rather than a scolding) to delve deeper into oneself in the aim of becoming as authentic and supportive of others as possible. It guides the reader to discover how to be true to themselves and others, considering race a central factor in our abilities to reach each other’s hearts. Every line I read I felt welcomed into a conversation where the author doesn’t portray herself as the expert to emulate or agree with, but rather as your companion on a journey that she is herself engaged in--which she models for the reader every step of the way by sharing her own experiences and challenges. What she offers is clearly in the service of enhancing the reader’s own process, not of convincing you of any particular position. I should also add that despite being such an accessible read, it’s packed with information! So much so, that it almost reads like a series of punchlines, skillfully strung together. It’s the kind of books you’ll read more than once and that will serve as a resource for a lifetime. Definitely a major contribution to this very important conversation!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. All white people should read this book By Miller Sherling Outstanding and thoroughly readable. Author does such a good job dissolving readers' defensiveness. All white people should read this--while it's about education, theoretically, it's really about understanding what our privilege means.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. EZ SOLUTIONS By Tweety08 I previously purchased this book in order to help me study for the math portion of the GREs. I didn't know what to expect because I have never heard of EZ Solutions in the past. I am thrilled that I did in fact decide to purchase this book because it helped me improve my GRE score by a very significant amount. For all of you who are like me (not good at math and find it difficult to comprehend solutions to certain math problems even after reading the solutions several times), this book is definitely for you! The way the problems are set up are simple and easy to understand and solve on youe own. I was so surprised how easy it was for me to grasp the examples given in each section (and there are a lot of examples to work with) and actually get them correct. This book is actually fun and easy to complete in no time (which is another plus). I have a lot of other prep books like Kaplan, ETS, Barron's (you name it, I have it) which are good books, but I think what they lack in comparison to EZ Solution Prep books are the fact that they are not really enjoyable or easy steps that everyone can follow. Those books can get you frustrated quickly, whereas the EZ Solutions book helps you relax and learn at the same time.

Put This on Your Reading Shelf By Diane Huff Pitts Donna Scofield loves historical research, and that passion strengthens every line of her new release, That First Montana Year. In fact, in my opinion, it’s the hallmark of this book. What transpires when a young couple get off to a wrong start in 1881? Will and B’Anne face ridicule, shame, disappointment over an unplanned pregnancy and yet nurse a flickering hope. Scofield opens a reader’s imagination with detailed descriptions of travel and daily life for these early Montana settlers. The details simply garnish the delightful tale of Will and B’Anne as they face the harshness of Montana and the enemies called Fear and Bitterness. Difficulties and judgmental spirits either blend a couple or force them apart. One page slid into another because I couldn’t put down this simple but frank story—two days, and I read the entire 250+ pages. You’ll feel the same way. I’m sure of it.No matter the century, people grapple with universal problems. We are no different than the young couple on the raw frontier. Time doesn’t change the need for vulnerability, truth, and faith.Kudos to Scofield for a grand novel well worth your reading pleasure.

She tries to hide it but is found out before she can make her escape to her aunt's, who would surely take her in. She tries to tell her family that it was just a drifter. B'Anne's brother knows better and goes and gets Will and drags Will back to "do right" by his sister. Will's mother wants Will to go to a college on the East Coast and get involved with a socialite. Although Will does marry B'Anne and agrees to move west near an uncle, he keeps his distance from the woman who is now his wife. Will they ever make it over that wall between them? How will they fare in the west where they don't know anyone but an uncle that Will hardly knows anything about? When a letter from Will's old socialite girlfriend shows up, will their marriage fall apart? I loved how this book brought to life the concepts of homesteading and the California Gold rush. Social Studies should be taught like this! I was never a fan of that class, but I loved learning about the concepts in this book. A little romance along the way didn't hurt either! I was given a copy of this book for my honest review. Highly recommended!

Too often authors of historical fiction try to write the story as if "teaching" you about the time it was written, giving you explanations for how things were done "back then." The author wrote the story as if we were right there with B'Anne and her struggles and never once gave an explanation as to why things were the way they were. She allowed me to figure things out as the reader, and didn't insult my intelligence.I also appreciate that Mrs. Scofield didn't try to hide difficult situations simply because she is a Christian author. Hey, life happens and we're smart enough to know that Christians sin and it doesn't have to be an endorsement of that sin to write about it! B'Anne's struggles were real for a young girl caught in her circumstances. If you enjoy historical fiction, I highly recommend this book!

Ebook PDF The High-Performing Preschool: Story Acting in Head Start Classrooms, by Gillian Dowley McNamee

The High-Performing Preschool takes readers into the lives of three- and four-year-old Head Start students during their first year of school and focuses on the centerpiece of their school day: story acting. In this activity, students act out stories from high-quality children’s literature as well as stories dictated by their peers. Drawing on a unique pair of thinkers—Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky and renowned American teacher and educational writer Vivian G. Paley—Gillian Dowley McNamee elucidates the ways, and reasons, this activity is so successful. She shows how story acting offers a larger blueprint for curricula that helps ensure all preschools—not just those for society’s well-to-do—are excellent.               McNamee outlines how story acting cultivates children’s oral and written language skills. She shows how it creates a crucial opportunity for teachers to guide children inside the interior logic and premises of an idea, and how it fosters the creation of a literary community. Starting with Vygotsky and Paley, McNamee paints a detailed portrait of high-quality preschool teaching, showing how educators can deliver on the promise of Head Start and provide a setting for all young children to become articulate, thoughtful, and literate learners.

The High-Performing Preschool: Story Acting in Head Start Classrooms, by Gillian Dowley McNamee

Review “As I read Gillian Dowley McNamee’s latest book, The High-Performing Preschool: Story Acting in Head Start Classrooms, I was reminded of a rose blossoming in time-lapse photography. At its center is the question she poses to young children, one child at a time: “Do you have a story to share?” Surrounding that center are layers of petals that illustrate why (i) asking this question in a classroom environment steeped in children’s literature and opportunities for play, (ii) listening to the child’s response, (iii) recording it, and (iv) supporting the child in dramatizing it in a meaningful and visual way with peers are efforts so vital to a young child’s learning and development. . . . McNamee offers those of us who believe that children learn through relationships a very powerful tool to grow the kinds of meaningful relationships within a learning community that make learning possible. This tool is simple. It is likely to be effective whether employed in a classroom full of active young children or in a focused small group. And it is useful to achieve multiple goals (e.g., to learn what the child is thinking about, what she knows, and where she is in her literacy development).”   (Schools)“In the efforts to expand formal educational opportunities for young children, one critical question looms: what kind of experiences should they have in preschool? This question is particularly important for those who need preschool the most: children from low-income families and children whose first language is not English. Compelling and clear, with a rich and lively interplay of theory and practice, The High-Performing Preschool goes a long way toward answering that question.” (Benjamin Mardell, Lesley University)“Increased academic pressures have forced many preschools and other programs for young children to engage in behaviors that those well versed in developmental appropriateness find troubling and ill-conceived. Yet as mandates to demonstrate student learning increase, many practitioners are not quite sure what to do. McNamee has provided a masterful blueprint grounded in theory and practice for those preschool teachers, administrators, and researchers who want to create learning spaces in which children are successful and supported. Organized into nine chapters, the book explores zones of proximal development, how acting out stories supports Common Core State Standards, ways to learn through stories, the introduction of storytelling and acting, changes in development, preparations for first grade, ways to stage stories, entry points for teachers, and classroom communities. The book is rich with examples and anecdotes, and McNamee presents a cogent and compelling picture of preschool programs serving low socioeconomic status students who achieve equity and excellence. . . . Highly recommended.” (Choice)“Through her imaginary conversations with Vivian Paley and Lev Vygotsky, two path breakers in the field of education, McNamee illuminates the social nature of learning, some of the pitfalls of recent educational reform, and the pathways to human creativity. The High-Performing Preschool is a must-read not only for every educator, policy maker, and parent ready to change the direction of education in the United States today, but also for anyone who seeks to lay the groundwork in young children for empathy, innovation, and leadership.” (Joshua Sparrow, Harvard University)“This is a telling book. The participatory pedagogy it offers builds on children’s enactments or dramatizations of their imagined stories and on extended discussions and interpretations of stories found in children’s literature. These activities provide the context for children to develop special ways of using words and narrative forms of discourse, central to future success in school. As McNamee demonstrates in detail, a classroom is never simply a setting: by engaging what is already there—the students’ ideas, imaginations, experiences, stories, relations, and conversations—it becomes a powerful source of development.” (Luis C. Moll, University of Arizona)

#1 New York Times bestseller Two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize David McCullough tells the dramatic story-behind-the-story about the courageous brothers who taught the world how to fly: Wilbur and Orville Wright. On a winter day in 1903, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, two unknown brothers from Ohio changed history. But it would take the world some time to believe what had happened: the age of flight had begun, with the first heavier-than-air, powered machine carrying a pilot.Who were these men and how was it that they achieved what they did?David McCullough, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, tells the surprising, profoundly American story of Wilbur and Orville Wright.Far more than a couple of unschooled Dayton bicycle mechanics who happened to hit on success, they were men of exceptional courage and determination, and of far-ranging intellectual interests and ceaseless curiosity, much of which they attributed to their upbringing. The house they lived in had no electricity or indoor plumbing, but there were books aplenty, supplied mainly by their preacher father, and they never stopped reading. When they worked together, no problem seemed to be insurmountable. Wilbur was unquestionably a genius. Orville had such mechanical ingenuity as few had ever seen. That they had no more than a public high school education, little money and no contacts in high places, never stopped them in their “mission” to take to the air. Nothing did, not even the self-evident reality that every time they took off in one of their contrivances, they risked being killed. In this thrilling book, master historian David McCullough draws on the immense riches of the Wright Papers, including private diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, and more than a thousand letters from private family correspondence to tell the human side of the Wright Brothers’ story, including the little-known contributions of their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them.

The Wright Brothers, by David McCullough

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of May 2015: Most people recognize the famous black-and-white photo of the Wright brothers on a winter day in 1903, in a remote spot called Kitty Hawk, when they secured their place in history as the first to fly a motor-powered airplane. That brilliant moment is the cornerstone of the new masterful book by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough, who brings his deft touch with language and his eye for humanizing details to the unusually close relationship between a pair of brothers from Dayton, Ohio, who changed aviation history. Bicycle shop owners by day, Wilbur and Orville taught themselves flight theory through correspondence with the Smithsonian and other experts. But the brothers soon realized that theory was no match for practical testing, and they repeatedly risked life and limb in pursuit of their goal—including when Orville fractured a leg and four ribs in a 75-foot plunge to the ground. McCullough’s narration of ventures such as this—their famous first flight at Kitty Hawk; the flight in Le Mans, France that propelled the brothers to international fame; the protracted patent battles back at home; and the early death of elder brother Wilbur—will immerse readers in the lives of the Wright family. Like other great biographies before it, The Wright Brothers tells the story about the individuals behind the great moments in history, while never sacrificing beauty in language and reverence in tone. – Manfred Collado

Review “A story of timeless importance, told with uncommon empathy and fluency. . . . A story, well told, about what might be the most astonishing feat mankind has ever accomplished. . . . The Wright Brothers soars.” (Daniel Okrent The New York Times Book Review)“David McCullough has etched a brisk, admiring portrait of the modest, hardworking Ohioans who designed an airplane in their bicycle shop and solved the mystery of flight on the sands of Kitty Hawk, N.C. He captures the marvel of what the Wrights accomplished and, just as important, the wonder felt by their contemporaries. . . . Mr. McCullough is in his element writing about seemingly ordinary folk steeped in the cardinal American virtues—self-reliance and can-do resourcefulness.” (Roger Lowenstein The Wall Street Journal)“The nitty-gritty of exactly how [the Wrights] succeeded is told in fascinating detail.” (Buzzy Jackson The Boston Globe)“Few historians have captured the essence of America — its rise from an agrarian nation to the world's dominant power — like David McCullough. . . . McCullough has defined American icons and revealed new dimensions to stories that long seemed exhausted. . . . An elegant, sweeping look at the two Americans who went where no others had gone before and whose work helped create a national excellence in aviation that continues today." (Ray Locker USA Today)"McCullough’s magical account of [the Wright Brothers'] early adventures — enhanced by volumes of family correspondence, written records, and his own deep understanding of the country and the era — shows as never before how two Ohio boys from a remarkable family taught the world to fly." (Reeve Lindbergh The Washington Post)“[McCullough] takes the Wrights’ story aloft. . . . Concise, exciting, and fact-packed. . . . Mr. McCullough presents all this with dignified panache, and with detail so granular you may wonder how it was all collected.” (Janet Maslin The New York Times)“David McCullough’s The Wright Brothers is a story about two brothers and one incredible moment in American history. But it’s also a story that resonates with anyone who believes deeply in the power of technology to change lives – and the resistance some have to new innovations.” (Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google)"McCullough vividly re-creates the failures and disappointments as the Wright brothers puzzle out the scienceof bird- and insect-wing design. . . . [McCullough] continues to deliverhigh-quality material with familiar facility and grace." (Larry Lebowitz The Miami Herald)"An outstanding saga of the lives of two men who left such a giant footprint on our modern age." (Booklist (starred review))“[An] enjoyable, fast-paced tale. . . . A fun, fast ride.” (The Economist)"[A] fluently rendered, skillfully focused study. . . . An educational and inspiring biography of seminal American innovators." (Kirkus Reviews)"McCullough's usual warm, evocative prose makes for an absorbing narrative; he conveys both the drama of the birth of flight and the homespun genius of America's golden age of innovation." (Publishers Weekly)“We all know what they did and where they did it — Kitty Hawk, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. But McCullough digs deeply to find out how they did it, and why they did it, and what happened to them in the years that followed.” (Harry Levins The St. Louis Post-Dispatch)"A compelling, upbeat story that underscores the importance of industriousness, creative intelligence and indomitable patience.” (Doug Childers Richmond Times-Dispatch)"Pleasurable to read. . . . McCullough has a gift for finding the best in his subjects without losing perspective on their flaws." (Margaret Quamme The Columbus Dispatch)“A master storyteller. . . . The brothers’ story unfolds and develops with grace and insight in a style at which McCullough is simply the best.” (David Henricks The San Antonio Express-News)

Lessons from the past, lessons for the future By Ash Jogalekar David McCullough is one of the preeminent American historians of our times, the deft biographer of John Adams and Harry Truman, and in this book he brings his wonderful historical exposition and storytelling skills to the lives of the Wright brothers. So much is known about these men that they have been turned into legends. Legends they were but they were also human, and this is the quality that McCullough is best at showcasing in these pages. The book is a quick and fun read. If I have some minor reservations they are only in the lack of technical detail which could have informed descriptions of some of the Wrights' experiments and the slightly hagiographical tint that McCullough is known to bring to his subjects. I would also have appreciated some more insights into attempts that other people around the world were making in enabling powered flight. Nevertheless, this is after all a popular work, and popular history seldom gets better than under McCullough's pen.The book shines in three aspects. Firstly McCullough who is quite certainly one of the best storytellers among all historians does a great job of giving us the details of the Wrights' upbringing and family. He drives home the importance of the Wrights' emphasis on simplicity, intellectual hunger and plain diligence, hard work and determination. The Wright brothers' father who was a Bishop filled the house with books and learning and never held back their intellectual curiosity. This led to an interest in tinkering in the best sense of the tradition, first with bicycles and then with airplanes. The Wrights' sister Katharine also played an integral part in their lives; they were very close to her and McCullough's account is filled with copious examples of the affectionate, sometimes scolding, always encouraging letters that the siblings wrote to each other. The Wrights' upbringing drives home the importance of family and emotional stability.Secondly, McCullough also brings us the riveting details of their experiments with powered flight. He takes us from their selection of Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a flight venue through their struggles, both with the weather conditions and with the machinery. He tells us how the brothers were inspired by Otto Lillienthal, a brilliant German glider pilot who crashed to his death and by Octave Chanute and Samuel Langley. Chanute was a first-rate engineer who encouraged their efforts while Samuel Langley headed aviation efforts at the Smithsonian and was a rival. The Wrights' difficult life on the sand dunes - with "demon mosquitoes", 100 degree weather and wind storms - is described vividly. First they experimented with the glider, then consequentially with motors. Their successful and historic flight on December 17, 1903 was a testament to their sheer grit, bon homie and technical brilliance. A new age had dawned.Lastly, McCullough does a fine job describing how the Wrights rose to world fame after their flight. The oddest part of the story concerns how they almost did not make it because institutions in their own country did not seem to care enough. They found a willing and enthusiastic customer in the French, perhaps the French had already embraced the spirit of aviation through their pioneering efforts in ballooning (in this context, Richard Holmes's book on the topic is definitely worth a read). Wilbur traveled to France, secured funding from individuals and the government and made experimental flights that were greeted with ecstatic acclaim. It was only when his star rose in France that America took him seriously. After that it was easier for him and Orville to secure army contracts and test more advanced designs. Throughout their efforts to get funding, improve their designs and tell the world what they had done, their own determined personalities and the support of their sister and family kept them going. While Wilbur died at the age of forty-five from typhoid fever, Orville lived until after World War 2 to witness the evolution of his revolutionary invention in all its glory and horror.McCullough's account of the Wright brothers, as warm and fast-paced as it is, was most interesting to me for the lessons it holds for the future. The brothers were world-class amateurs, not professors at Ivy League universities or researchers in giant corporations. A similar attitude was demonstrated by the amateurs who built Silicon Valley, and that's also an attitude that's key to American innovation. The duo's relentless emphasis on trial and error - displayed to an almost fanatical extent by their compatriot Thomas Edison - is also an immortal lesson. But perhaps what the Wright brothers' story exemplifies the most is the importance of simple traits like devotion to family, hard work, intense intellectual curiosity and most importantly, the frontier, can-do attitude that has defined the American dream since its inception. It's not an easy ideal to hold on to, and as we move into the 21st century, we should always remember Wilbur and Orville who lived that ideal better than almost anyone else. David McCullough tells us how they did it.

His writing style is concise, thorough, and unpretentious. I was able to read it easily and enjoyably and learned many things about the Wright family that I didn’t know. The book was thus valuable to me.FAMILYMcCullough makes it clear that the Wilbur and Orville were a product of their family environment. Their father was the major influence. Milton Wright was a minister and finally a bishop in the United Brethren Church in Christ.McCullough writes — “He was an unyielding abstainer, which was rare on the frontier, a man of rectitude and purpose— all of which could have served as a description of Milton himself and Wilbur and Orville as well.”His strict values molded and focused the views of the three younger Wrights (Katherine, Wilbur, and Orville). In addition to his strictness, he was a true classical liberal in his beliefs in the scientific method and equal rights for all people, no matter their race or gender. For example, Milton wrote to his sons when they were in Paris trying to get support for their flying machine: “Sons—Be men of the highest types personally, mentally, morally, and spiritually. Be clean, temperate, sober minded, and great souled.” As grown, experienced, and highly successful inventors, they responded: “Father — All the wine I have tasted since leaving home would not fill a single wine glass. I am sure that Orville and myself will do nothing that will disgrace the training we received from you and Mother.”McCullough writes — “Years later, a friend told Orville that he and his brother would always stand as an example of how far Americans with no special advantages could advance in the world. ‘But it isn’t true,’ Orville responded emphatically, ‘to say we had no special advantages . . . the greatest thing in our favor was growing up in a family where there was always much encouragement to intellectual curiosity.’ ”BUSINESSMcCullough records Wilbur’s thoughts on being in business in a letter to his brother Lorin in 1894:“In business it is the aggressive man, who continually has his eye on his own interest, who succeeds. … There is nothing reprehensible in an aggressive disposition, so long as it is not carried to excess, for such men make the world and its affairs move. . . . I entirely agree that the boys of the Wright family are all lacking in determination and push. That is the very reason that none of us have been or will be more than ordinary businessmen. … We ought not to have been businessmen.”In 1911, Wilbur wrote:“When we think what we might have accomplished if we had been able to devote this time [fighting patent infringement suits] to experiments, we feel very sad, but it is always easier to deal with things than with men, and no one can direct his life entirely as he would choose.”The Wrights never built, or even tried to build, an industrial empire as Ford or Edison or their Dayton neighbors John and Frank Patterson (National Cash Register) had done. The Wrights were intellectual men and women.ENGINEERINGMcCullough's book is quite light on technical discussions. But the Wrights' unique approach to technology development is the essence of who they were and why they were such successful engineers when others better funded, better educated, and better connected failed. For example, McCullough ignored the following examples.Wilbur and Orville were superb engineers, though neither went beyond high school. They found by trial and error that the existing data held by the science of aeronautics was flawed even though its principles were generally correct. They zeroed in on weight, power, control, lift, and the propeller as the main technologies that had to be solved. What is so astounding is not just that they solved these technical problems and reduced them to practice, but that they did it in record time. In a matter of three years, they invented or reinvented virtually the whole field of aeronautics. For example, the wind tunnel had been invented thirty years before, but Wilbur and Orville developed it into a precise quantitative instrument. With it, they developed not just the wing configurations, but coupled with the understanding that a propeller is simply a wing on a rotating shaft, they rewrote the rules of propeller design and optimized its efficiency dramatically. These two men had an insight into, and a reverence for, quantitative empirical data that was unique in aeronautical engineering at that time.McCullough shows how that reverence for truth (data) grew out of their family standards. But there was more to it than the principles of a strict Protestant upbringing. It also has to do with time and place. The late 1800s and early 1900s was a period of great minds applying the rules of The Enlightenment and the experience of science to practical problems. The place was an industrial axis, which was anchored by Dayton and Detroit and included Flint, Toledo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and many other cities in the Midwest. This is where Edison, Ford, Dow, Firestone, the Patterson Brothers, and the Wright Brothers lived and created their technologies. There was a culture of boundless innovation and an infrastructure that included materials and support equipment that fostered great invention. It was similar in many ways to Silicon Valley today.REINFORCE THE NARRATIVEAnother area that could be strengthened in the book is its niche. There has been so much written about the Wrights that each new book needs to distinguish itself in some way with a different point of view, a new set of facts, or a fresh interpretation of old facts. For example, McCullough writes — “In early 1889, while still in high school, Orville started his own print shop in the carriage shed behind the house, and apparently with no objections from the Bishop. Interested in printing for some while, Orville had worked for two summers as an apprentice at a local print shop. He designed and built his own press using a discarded tombstone, a buggy spring, and scrap metal.”That last sentence about building his own printing press defines so much about Orville and his simple pragmatism. To reinforce that point requires some expansion of that event or similar other defining events in the lives of Wilbur and Orville. I wanted to read more about Orville's compulsive act of invention, but it wasn't there. The 81 photos McCullough includes in his book are treasures. Many of them are familiar, but so many are new looks at the Wrights. I wish there were greatly expanded captions below each photo, for each one is a story in itself. One source of knowledge about the Wrights’ approach to aeronautics is the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. It is normally overshadowed by the more popular Air and Space Museum in Washington, but the exhibits at the Air Force Museum walk you through the Wrights’ engineering exploits with a degree of detail and insight I have found nowhere else.

Fascinating Story about the Men (and the Woman!) at the Forefront of Aviation By Bassocantor THE WRIGHT BROTHERS is an easy to read, exciting story about the men (and the woman!) at the forefront of aviation. David McCullough weaves a fun tale exploring the competition to accomplish the first flight. It's a story of hardship, dedication, and scientific research by mechanics without even a college education. Wilbur and Orville Wright accomplished for about $1000 what the director of the Smithsonian museum had just crashed into the Potomac River for $70,000.Perhaps the most notable feature of this book is the detail and research evident. As an example of the author's persistent research, the author is now credited with solving the infamous "hockey stick incident." There has long been a mystery about the villain who smacked Wilbur in the face with a hockey stick. The author finally resolves this mystery, finding a diary entry pointing to the actual villain. It turns out that the culprit was a ne'r-do well named Oliver Crook Haugh. In fact, Haugh was later executed for murdering his own family. The significance of the hockey stick incident is this: It caused depression so severe that Wilbur remained mostly home-ridden. As a result, he became a voracious reader; more importantly, Wilbur and Orville become closer, ultimately teaming them as business partners together. Of course, this meant a printing press business, followed by a bike shop, followed by airplane inventors/mechanics.The author explains the rejection of the brothers by the American government, while France wholeheartedly embraced and encouraged the men. American officials expressed no interest (at first, that is.) Even when a prominent senator encouraged the government to investigate, nothing happened.McCullough emphasizes the mechanical skill and research of the two. The Wright brothers did not just stumble on a successful design; rather, it was from research and observation on birds--specifically the "wing warping" that allows birds to fly. Of course, this is obvious to all aeronautical engineers today, but not so back then. Also, the engine had to be light, so they custom-designed their own engine, using aluminum. This led to that wonderful event on Dec. 17, 1903. With Orville Wright at the controls, the "Flyer 1" is airborne for 12 seconds: “The Flyer rose, dipped down, rose again, bounced and dipped again like a bucking bronco when one wing struck the sand.” Orville recalled later, “It was only a flight of 12 seconds and it was an uncertain, wavy, creeping sort of flight at best, but it was a real flight at last.”Amazingly, the first flight at Kitty Hawk was scarcely noticed by the press. One editor remarked, "I guess the truth is that we were just plain dumb."' I think most readers will be surprised by THE WRIGHT BROTHERS. Yes, it's a fun, enjoyable read, but it packs a punch, too. I had no idea, for instance, that their sister played a key role. Nor did I know that the U.S. government was initially so reluctant to encourage the brothers' efforts. Now I know!
