The social upheaval of the 1960s ushered in lasting change across the country, prompted, in part, by major civil rights and anti-poverty legislation, a record number of students seeking college degrees, and the expansion of land-grant public universities into urban centers. Guided by an idealism and ambition characteristic of the time, the University of Massachusetts Boston held its first classes in 1965. In a city that prided itself on being the birthplace of American public education but remained the exclusive preserve of private universities, UMass Boston's founders set their sights on creating "a great public urban university" that would "stand with the city" and provide students of all ethnicities, ages, and social classes with opportunities "equal to the best."Richly illustrated and enlivened by reminiscences and profiles, UMass Boston at 50 tells the remarkable coming-of-age story of an institution that has consistently defied the odds, risen to the occasion, and served tens of thousands of students, from Vietnam veterans to students with roots in more than 150 countries. The university that opened in a half-renovated gas company building in downtown Boston now enjoys a reputation for wide-ranging, innovative research and service and holds steadfastly to its mission and its teaching soul. UMass Boston at 50 also tells of the university's ambitious plans to become the preeminent student-centered urban public university of the twenty-first century.

Review "UMass Boston at 50 is the story of a university that could―and does. From humble beginnings, the University of Massachusetts Boston has grown to become a leading urban research university, opening countless doors of opportunity for its students, contributing to the discovery of new knowledge, and serving communities at home and around the world. UMass Boston at 50 tells how a fledgling public university―alone in a city of private universities―found its wings and took flight. And how it plans to soar to even greater heights."―Chancellor J. Keith Motley

Establishing Umass Boston's Identity By Dean I was worried this book might be a self-aggrandizing collection of captioned photos from the UMB archives, but it isn't that at all.Umass Boston, lacking the clear history and identity of many of Boston's other colleges, really needs what this book provides. And although the narrative touts the school's real achievements and lofty mission as a public university, it does not self aggrandize. It does not exclude the political scandal around the Dorchester campus's shoddy construction, the clunky absorption of Boston State College, and the turmoil of the initial passing over of Keith Motley as Chancellor.Umass Boston at 50 traces the university's roots back further than 50 years. To be sure, the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts system opened in 1965. However, Boston State College, with its own much longer history, joined Umass Boston in 1982. Although it was very much an absorption by UMB, with the closure of Boston State's campus and elimination of Boston State's redundant programs, faculty and staff--it boosted UMB's undergraduate entrollment by 38% and tripled graduate enrollment.Boston State College dates to a teacher training program begun in 1852. I think that if UMB wanted to consider itself 163 years old, it would be justified in doing so. In fact, I am surprised UMB doesn't do this, since it could strengthen the school's image and prestige. On the other hand, I suppose it is also worth something to be clear that UMB is a real university, not simply an expanded teachers college. At any rate, I feel that the book handles this thoughtfully by recognizing Boston State as a key part of what made UMB what it is today. The book only touches on another important piece of UMB's story. There is a vignette about Mark D'Agostino, a medical doctor who credits UMB with helping him find direction as a young adult with a drug problem. I know there are many more stories like this.
