As Albert Slater lays his wife to rest, his raw pain mixes with old scars from the First World War. That pain has stayed with him throughout his life, but protecting his children’s innocence he has kept it from them. He decides to write his story for them to read when he joins his wife in heaven. He writes how his training had him feeling confident going into the war; how that was shattered in his first action; how he endured the rest of the war and how he settled back into sedate rural English village life. ‘From the Mud’ is one man’s story and his way of keeping the memory of his fallen friends alive.

About the Author Paul Emery is an independent British multi-genre author. His debut novel, the science fiction Kindle book "Ten" was published in 2014 after the basic concept had bounced around in his head like a game of Pong for many years. His second novel "From the Mud" is set in and around World War One. No matter when and where the novel is set, the focus of his fiction writing is always the characters, concentrating on their inner most thoughts and isn't afraid to touch on sensitive issues such as anxiety and depression. Although his wife would no doubt disagree, he is also somewhat of a romantic at heart. Paul started writing on the NFL (UK) forums, being a rare British fan of "American football", before a spell writing for the British website the Football Diner. After the Diner closed its doors, he got the chance to write for the Huddle Report's sister site Huddle Notes. He has managed to tie NFL Network's Mike Mayock in the Huddle Report's Top 100 contest three years in a row and published a 2015 NFL Draft Guide. Paul lives in the Southampton area of the UK. He is married with one daughter.

By pkbalog My husband was a vietnam veteran who suffered from ptsd and had flashbacks often. He died in 2010 from the effects of agent orange exposure in vietnam. This story was a wonderful tribute to our veterans who deserve so much more support than we as a country have given them. This story might help some of you that had friends or relatives that returned home a different person, sometimes just needing to be alone in order to maintain their sanity. A huge thank you to this wonderful author that made it easier to understand some of what these veterans were experiencing, I think no one that hasn't experienced war firsthand can truly fully understand. Thank you again to Paul Emery and thank you for your service to all of our veterans.

I don't read too many books about war and "war" related topics. They make me sad. I do very much enjoy this author so I would read more from Paul but this book just wasn't my type of book. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Simply put, this book is an account written by Bert, of his life and how WW1 affected him.But this is not a*war story*Written by Bert himself, the writing reflects the man.Quiet, softly spoken, a humble man of depth and courage. And love. This doesn't shy from the horrors of trench warfare, but everything is in its place as part of the story.Maybe it struck a chord with me as my grandfather was in the trenches in WW1, regardless, you cannot help but be moved by reading this book.
