This dazzling debut brings the Dark Ages to light and illuminates one Saxon noblewoman's romance with a Viking warrior and her struggle to find her path in a changing and dangerous world869. For eighteen years, Avelynn, the beautiful and secretly pagan daughter of the Ealdorman of Somerset, has lived in an environment of love, acceptance, and equality. Somerset has flourished under twenty years of peace. But with whispers of war threatening their security, Avelynn's father makes an uncompromising decision that changes her life forever.
Forced into a betrothal with Demas, a man who only covets her wealth and status, Avelynn's perception of independence is shattered. With marriage looming, she turns to her faith, searching for answers in an ancient ritual along the coast, only to find Alrik The Blood-Axe and sixty Viking berserkers have landed.
In a year of uncertainty that sees Avelynn discover hidden powers, stumble into a passionate love affair with Alrik, and lead men into battle, Avelynn must walk a fine line as her deceptions mount and Demas' tactics to possess her become more desperate and increasingly brutal.
Avelynn and Alrik are caught in the throes of fate as they struggle to find the way back to themselves and onwards to each other.

By FogCityBookGal In Avelynn, a young, independent Saxon girl attempts to realize her purpose during a frantic war against the Vikings. She is promised to a man she doesn’t love and loves a man she cannot have. The main Viking in the story is all you’d wish him to be. Large, strong, forceful, but has a kindness about him that us modern women crave. This book covers a long time period and summarizes over months a lot. A couple chapters ended with a threat of war or conflict that took a long time to play out. There was plenty of war later on, but I felt let down when I read a chapter ending with the Viking’s storming the village and then it was just glossed over in the next chapter. There are some intimate moments that will not be suitable for all readers, involving rape, same sex relationships (not always in the best light) and even rude comments directed at children. I think for the time and the villain, these things were backed up with a sound plot, but I think some readers will find it too much. The love scenes between the hero and the heroine are intoxicating and lovely. The bad guy is someone you will want to strangle while he sleeps and he isn’t the only one. The author creates baddies and heroes well, making you really care when some of them die. My favorite character in the book was Wulfric, a sort of guard who was always around. I think I"d like to read a whole book on his life. While the love story is fair, there is a lot of stuff in this book that didn’t need to be there. I found way too many paragraphs of lists…listing food, listing herbs, listing items in her pack. And also many paragraphs of questions…What would she do? What would he do? What would they do? Who was he? Where did he come from? Etc… For me, these lists and questions became tedious. I would have enjoyed the book much better without them. However, I think if you are into witches/druids/earth magic, you will enjoy this book. There were many druid rituals played out as she called for each goddess and cast circles and did witch-y things. There is also a large amount of fighting and war. For a historical romance, I’d say it’s heavy on the history, ritual, and daily life of someone of Avelynn’s time. While the love story is great, it takes a backseat to the telling of a life story. Provided you like Avelynn, I think you’ll be looking for a sequel.

By Jenerated Reviews The intricate layers of Marissa Campbells' book Avelynn were impressive for any work but more so as this was her historical romance debut! In an engaging writing style Ms. Campbell quickly captures her audience and relates a fast paced and detailed story full of angst, bravery and passion. Set in the Dark Ages this author did a fine job of incorporating multiple facets of the period, from the social constraints of women to the political currents dictating the era, yet still maintained the tale's feel of fiction. A nice mystical undertone added to rather than detracted from this story and the chemistry between the heroine and the hero was dynamically steamy. Marissa Campbell is an author to watch and who demonstrates great potential!*I received this ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*

By LJTraveler One of those books that the longer you think about it, the more reasons you realize it missed the mark. The most obvious ones: Pretty sure that Vikings and Druids didn't walk around saying "Okay" and "Good luck" all the time. The ending was nothing more than a set up for a sequel. It ended abruptly and without resolution. Violent and a bit trashy too. Save your time and money and pick up a Susanna Kearsley novel instead.
