By John Miller I'm a big fan of anything the Great Ardell writes - and a prolific writer he is, indeed. I can’t recall an occasion when I haven’t come away with something to think about. In the Wellness Orgasms book, Ardell (with the help of his Australian mate, Donovan) has done it again.I got 'great pleasure' from reading this book and here are a few of the thoughts that welled up while I was on the job.A sexual orgasm comes at the end of a 'something' that usually requires some effort to achieve - an effort that may have been built up over years, months, weeks, days or (if you're in luck) minutes. Only on the rarest of occasions can you conjure up an orgasm of any description without some effort- personal or joint. We get great pleasure, happiness, joy, even ecstasy ... out of doing things that we enjoy doing. (The late James Rohn had this idea that only the people most likely to achieve ecstasy were the people who could spell the word.) We need to spend more time doing things we enjoy doing. If you had a job you loved doing so much that you'd do it for nothing - and at the same time got paid handsomely you'd be drowning in wellness orgasms. The pleasure of the wellness orgasm may or not be enhanced by the company of others, in fact the inability to achieve a wellness orgasm on your own would appear to be the manifestation of a character flaw or a personality disorder. There is evidence that the wellness orgasm is enhanced by exercise.Melbourne physical educator, Brian Nettleton conducted an experiment where he gave people two sheep counters to put in their left and right pockets. When people experienced pleasure they clicked the right counter. When they felt dreadful, they clicked the left counter. People who exercised came out with a higher net gain in pleasurable feelings.Ardell and Donovan are right into exercise, they speak from experience, particularly the great Ardell who as a mature septuagenarian is a world champion tri-athlete. I’d take on board anything they have to say on the benefits of exercise. Same with diet.Recreation in its many and varied forms seems to be an important conjurer of wellness orgasms, whether as exercising, music and any of the other arts - literature, movies, art ... Doing ‘it’ may add to the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from making something - either abstract or practical. Gurdjieff placed great store on the value of gardening. It’s natural that the topic of sex would rear its head in the book, but it’s not ugly. It’s liberating. In fact the concept of liberty lies at the heart of Wellness Orgasms, creating the conditions for the wellness orgasm to prosper. It can't be much chop being a woman in Mosel right now, though you can never be sure what’s going on underneath a burka - mutilated genitalia aside!Ardell is a champion of the works of the great libertarian, Robert Ingersol - and why not. If you're not well acquainted with Ingersol, get your hands on a copy of Wellness Orgasms. It's a wonderful key to the door of libertine philosophy. A single quote from Ingersol is worth a thousand sermons. The freedom to live in a democratic society, under the rule of law, in a society that believes in equality, decency, fairness and egalitarianism, releases us from the shackles of ancient superstition imposed by fascists, dictators, autocrats, psychopaths, schizophrenics, criminals, mad rooters, drunks, pedophiles, adulterers, bigamists, polygamists, masturbators, pimps, flashers, voyeurs, abusers, rapists, sinners, slave owners, temple prostitutes, vamps, divorcees, nutters, rotters, shysters, frauds, charlatans, mountebanks, cannibals, mass murderers, misogynists, priests, mullahs and rabbis - and the gods they conjured up in their own image. The wellness orgasm thrives in a climate of liberty, privacy, freedom of expression and a fair go.Whilst Ardell and Donovan don't have anything to say about 'size' they do note that the wealthier you are the higher the likelihood of wellness orgasms. Whether wealth matters a great deal may be debatable, but I'd rather be wealthier than I am now. In fact, if I was a tad wealthier I'd be outside enjoying the soft sun of a warmish Canberra Autumn morning. In a world wallowing in self pity and depression, if you have a plan to fill an empty and meaningless life with meaning and purpose you'll be well on the way to a wellness orgasmic lifestyle. The book branches off into a few tributaries, but that's just Ardell. Where he goes, follow. If it's a road less travelled, keep following.Wellness Orgasms is a gem of a book. For anyone who thirsts for more than their share of daily wellness orgasms, I’d recommend not putting put it on the bookshelf until it had done its time on the bedside cabinet.Five stars.I'm going out side for a while.John MillerCanberra

Steven Jonas, MD, MPH, March 26, 2015Wellness Orgasms is a powerful, empowering book. It shows you how you can live life to the fullest by becoming a practitioner of REAL Wellness, those letters standing for Reason, Exuberance, Athleticism and Liberty. It shows you how you can live life to the fullest by depending entirely upon the ability of the human mind, your mind, to reason, to solve problems, to set priorities, and then act in accordance with them. All along the way you will be enjoying those “Wellness Orgasms,” which Don and Grant (full disclosure here: both friends of mine) fully explain in the book.REAL Wellness goes way beyond conventional Wellness (which as it happens, Don played a major role in developing from the 1970s onwards), which is essentially a list of do’s and don’ts. It’s a very positive, productive list, mind you, but REAL Wellness goes well beyond it. It teaches you to recognize and come to depend upon your own power, your own strength, and your own ability to reason and understand the world and your place in it, based on what I call Reasonism, in contrast with one form of theism or another. As well as explaining REAL Wellness and the Wellness Orgasms that are based on it, it deals with a variety of issues of public policy. (Surprise, surprise. Don has master’s degree in urban planning and doctorate in health and public policy. He was the executive director of two major metropolitan health planning agencies (Twin Cities of Minnesota and the San Francisco Bay Area) during the area wide health planning era in the late 60’s and early 70’s. And so, among other issues, he and Grant consider the US health care delivery system, the ever rising wealth/income gap in the United States, the U.S. system of incarceration, drug-use policy, all in the context of what they mean and do not mean for REAL WellnessThe book covers Exuberance, which is especially important in achieving Wellness Orgasms, in detail. As for Athleticism, Don is a multi-times National and Worlds age-group champion in both triathlon and duathlon. I’m a tri/duathlete too. It’s just that I finish at the back of the pack, not at its front as Don does. BUT athleticism provides as many WO’s for me as it does for Don, because I know what my abilities are and I set my goals appropriately. And so can it for you, regardless of your level of athleticism. There is an extensive discussion of what Liberty really means and what it doesn’t. And it doesn’t mean, as many Rightists would have it, that, for example, corporations have the liberty to do just about anything they want to to their employees, their customers, the environment and the nation at large, while women do not have the liberty to make choices about the outcome of pregnancy before the time of fetal viability. The book concludes with a thought-provoking conversation with a “God” who wishes very firmly that the Abrahamic religions never happened. What he thinks about polytheism at the Hindu end of the spectrum and “no-God” at the Buddhist end of the spectrum is not revealed. But he does have some very firm, negative views on religion and how it is used in the modern world.Do you want to free your mind and become REALly well at the same time? Read this book and then, over time, incorporate its lessons into your life. As I have (long before, I must say, Don’s and Grant’s book appeared), you will be glad that you did.

This book delivers at least 100 wellness orgasms and aha moments By Dr. Judd Allen Don and Grant have articulated a full-throated picture of what wellness for means for atheists. The writing style is great fun. They challenge mediocrity and remind us of the many benefits of being fit, freedom and reason. They reference many like-minded thinkers and correctly point out the many ills that religious dogma and blind faith have been a party to.I was particularly challenged by the idea that we are better off letting go of the pretense of a meaningful life. I still cling to the meaning I create with work, family, friends and community. Wellness Orgasms makes me want to write a book about how to find and create cultures that provide opportunities for meaning through the arts, our connection with nature, transcendental experiences through meditation, family, work and community. If you live in cultures that do not provide opportunities for meaning, then Drs. Ardell and Donovan have a good remedy. Let go of meaning.
