"A Path with Heart" is an invitation to think about great teaching as a journey of self-discovery. Master Teachers understand, and research confirms, that it’s not only what we “know” about our subject and pedagogy that determines our effectiveness; but also how well we know our students and ourselves. “A Path with Heart” offers a new and dynamic approach to increasing student performance while decreasing stress and teacher burnout. It’s a practical guide for teachers willing to walk a road ‘less travelled,’ a path of self reflection, self-awareness, and practice. It provides tools and practices to help us: Reconnect to our purpose and passion De-stress and diminish overwhelm Deepen our self-awareness through mindfulness Acknowledge and use our strengths and gifts Become aware of our historical tendencies and habits Stay centered and in the midst of action Build trusting relationships Bring learning to life by bringing our life to learning, and more... Reilly exposes the myth that teaching with heart is “soft,” and grounds the book in research that confirms what many teachers know intuitively, ‘soft’ skills are really ‘essential skills.’ In fact, it's our hearts that hold the keys to unlocking our students' minds. From the book: "It’s you (the self you are) that inspires, motivates, encourages, and ignites the fire of curiosity in your students. They flourish when they come into contact with your own true heart. That’s the magic of teaching." Trusting relationships are key to our students' academic success, as well as to their emotional and social growth. Never has a book that focuses on the inner life, emotional well-being, and classroom presence of the teacher been more necessary. Teachers are increasingly feeling the stress of punitive measures of accountability, a fixation on test scores, changing demographics, increased poverty, and a culture of scarcity. Reilly offers a passionate call to keep teaching a "path with heart". Like Parker Palmer's, "The Courage to Teach" this book broadens the conversation around great teaching to include knowledge of ‘self.’ It's an inspirational love letter to the teaching profession and to and to those caring individuals who have the courage to share themselves with their students, day in and day out. From the book: "In my experience human beings have shown themselves to be resilient, self-healing, self learning organisms; and when we as educators turn our attention inward, when we’re able to find the wisdom within us; we find the path that is precisely right for us, and us alone.”

Segaloff Most teaches we know enter the profession to help children and take part in molding the future. The author continuously acknowledges that these intentions are being thwarted more now than ever. Every turn we make, there is more paperwork, new initiatives, students with greater and more diverse needs, high stakes testing...it is easy to begin to feel that our job is becoming impossible and it is certainly becoming less fun.The author invites us to do something teachers rarely do. He wants us to make teaching all about ourselves. At first, thus is ridiculous! We started teaching for the benefit of ithers. It was never a question of us! The author helps us see how wrong we are...it is always about us.Like any healthy relationship, it is impossible to truly love and understand another until we can do so ourselves. Mr. Reilly walks us through a journey to change our mindset about teaching. We begin to view teaching as a method, not just to impart information, but to examine and share our true selves with others. The author provides anecdotes along our journey that we can relate to on many levels and uses them to demonstrate how improving ourselves us what makes a master teacher. There were times I laughed while reading and many times I cried. I completely understood how trapped some of the teachers described by Mr. Reilly had become. I completely enjoyed finding my way down "the Path With Heart." I have been teaching for 15 years. I am not afraid to admit I felt ashamed for sharing some of the same negative beliefs and behaviors exhibited in this book, but I truly feel I am better able to self-examine and continue to grow. I feel as if I have re-found purpose in my chosen career and may be better equipped to face the challenges handed to me every day.

White The current approach to learning, which its orientation to memory regurgitation is undermining human potential. We learn, we report what we learned and we forget. We follow this cycle over and over.We are so much more than this. The potential for each human at every stage of life is limitless. This limitlessness can only be discovered by a commitment to a path of mastery. The area of mastery isn't critical. Any area of life, in which we dedicate ourselves to master expand our humanity.Pete brings both authenticity and heart to this cause. As a passionate educator, Pete has witnessed the changes in our educational system and the cost of many of these changes to the lives of our youth. He brings the voice of purpose to those of us that have chosen teachership as our calling. He challenges us to go within to find our purpose and let it fuel our desire to serve others.Pete is not "preaching" a new idea, but sharing his stories of choices taken, lessons learned and rewards received. Pete knows that learning isn't just about the mind. He supports the reader in getting the most from this book with is chapter ending reflections and actions.Pete writes in the mold of Parker Palmer extolling us to be the greatest teacher we can be because the life of our students depends on it. I loved this book and recommend it highly.

By Bill Merna Wish I had read it in about my 5th year of teaching - enough experience to appreciate it and enough time left to put it ti full use. It almost makes me want to go back to the classroom - note the word "almost". I know you worked with administrators as well as teachers but for teachers I think very effective would be how you mentioned some of the ways administration treated teachers that the teachers didn't like and then changed the same situation to teacher/student. My Mom liked to use the quote - "We see most clearly in others the faults that we ourselves possess." That thought has made me bite my tongue many times and I think is a good one for teachers [and coaches of course] to keep in mind. I was thinking of what to do with the book - put it in the teacher's room at school - too random. Then I centered my thinking and it was clear. My daughter-in-law is a teacher - a caring one who is sometimes frustrated by some current educational practices at her school. I'll offer it to her for her summer reading and when she likes it ask her to pass it on! It may cut down on sales but could boost sales for your NEXT book!I really did enjoy it and your selection of quotes, poems, etc. was great.
