Harrowing - but "unputdownable" By Anna B The Last Shroud is the last in Mr Birks excellent series set in the bloody and turbulent years of the War of the Roses. Ned Elder is sick of war and combat, but between Warwick’s ambitions and Ned’s loyalty to Edward of York, strife is difficult to avoid, even more so when Warwick decides to take control of the kingdom once and for all.Ned Elder is a complex character, but by far the most likeable of the very different Elder siblings. Together with his trusted companions Bear and Hal, he does not back down from duty – not even when it separates him from his wife and baby. Over the series, we have seen Ned develop from a youth driven mostly by raw anger to a man who does as he must, guided by his integrity and honour. Not always the easiest of choices – but then Ned rarely takes the easy road.A varied cast of characters (and I must say I rather enjoyed seeing Anne Neville depicted as less than angelic), complemented by vivid descriptive writing and the author’s obvious expertise in the period he has chosen to depict makes this book a fantastic read – harrowing but quite impossible to put down.Stories set in periods of civil war rarely have happy endings. There is too much loss, too many unhealed wounds, and The Last Shroud is no exception – to paste something pink and fluffy onto this grim and vivid depiction of the horrors of war would have been a farce. I close this book and wish the decimated Elder family well – after all that adventure, they definitely deserve some years of peace and quiet!
