73 of 75 people found the following review helpful. One of the high points of American crime fiction By floydslip James Ellroy's so-called "L.A. Quartet" (The Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, L.A. Confidential, and White Jazz) is one of the seminal bodies of work in American crime fiction. I have chosen to include a review under "The Big Nowhere" not because I feel it is the best book of the four (L.A. Confidential has a broader scope, takes greater risks, and is more compelling); simply, none of the other books moves me as much as this one does.Danny Upshaw, Mal Considine, and Buzz Meeks are among the most vividly-drawn and complex characters ever found in a crime novel. Despite the glaring character flaws in each one of them, some of which border on repugnance, I still manage to empathize with them completely. Ellroy is an absolute master when it comes to tying characters' actions to their various motivations and desires. This gives his works a depth that goes beyond the mere telling of a story. The ways in which Upshaw, Considine, and Meeks relate to the action--the ways in which they internalize it and bend it to their own specific set of needs--force the reader to take a personal interest in them. They are no longer merely the vehicle to draw the reader into the action, as most "detective" characters are in this genre; instead, each one provides a distinct point of view of the action, shaping it as much as they are shaped by it. Not since Philip Marlowe went to jail for Terry Lennox--and Marlowe's own ideals--has a crime novel so tightly woven plot with character.The story itself is too complicated to do justice in a brief review so I won't even try. The sheer number of subplots and ancillary characters could fill out the entire oeuvre of lesser writers, but Ellroy seamlessly integrates it all into a story that will have you playing the angles long after the book is finished. In fact, a second reading is almost necessary to catch all the nuance.If you're a fan of detective fiction, these books are required reading. Even if you're not, Ellroy is a fine writer on any level. If you're squeamish at all, you should take a pass.

41 of 43 people found the following review helpful. The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth By Stephen McLeod 'The Big Nowhere' is my personal favorite Ellroy novel. As in the epic 'L.A. Confidential', the book's tortuous plotlines follow three cops tortured by their obsessions, converging in a dark night of the soul like no other in American literature.The miracle of this book is that it is an intensely moral drama. Danny Upshaw is one of the most tragic and driven characters in modern literature. But not even Danny is as ironically fascinating as Buzz Meeks. Buzz is as corrupt as they come, but there is a glimmer of goodness in him that brightens to a terrible fire. His fate lies just around the corner in the prologue to 'L.A. Confidential.' Mal Considine's obsessions were born in the liberation of the death camps after the war, and he is indelibly marked by the horror. His one grasp at goodness is something (someone) that is always just beyond his reach.I won't give anything up. The action is a series of plots centered around each of these three men. The plots converge into an unspeakable horror. But the horror of wanton crime is only a reflection of the horror within the darkest reaches of the soul. in 'The Big Nowhere', Ellroy does what Auden prescribed in his great poem "September 1, 1939:" in the depths of the darkness, and without sentimentality or pity, he nonetheless "shows an affirming flame."

26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. The Big 'Somewhere' out of Ellroy's head By T.P.Roddy I was debating whether to give this book four or five stars. The only reason being is that the story is pretty complex, a lot more so than The Black Dahlia, but if your the type of reader who can plow through a book in one or two sittings (which I am not) then I'm sure it'll be easier to keep all the charcters and the information fresh in your mind. Although I did have to do a lot of back tracking here and there to feel caught up with all the names and references, I gave it the 'five star benifit of the doubt' because 'what a story' it is! Plus, there is a fine summation of everything and everybody at the very end. I loved 'The Black Dahlia' and this book too and Ellroy certainly kicked it up a notch here. I enjoyed the movie L.A. Confidential and will read it next and I heard DePalma's doing a 'Black Dahlia' movie, but to put 'The Big Nowhere' to film would be very challenging: Communism, the mob, teamsters, the LAPD, the morgue, a pin-up, a pimp, prostitutes and a plastic surgeon, a shrink, crooked cops, taxidermists, nasty four legged creatures, heroin, a homicidal maniac and Howard Hughes. A word of advice, DO NOT read to far into the review pages here because someone gives away a major part of the story in their review. I wish someone idiot-proofed the reviews at Amazon to stop one like that from ruining the story for others. But even though I found out the fate of a certain character, I still was surprised and enjoyed this book entirely.

By Wendy Brentner As I read the book, I wondered how many teachers from Elmhurst were mentioned in her surveys. My sister and I have discussed many times how blessed we were with teachers we had at Roosevelt School, Sandburg Jr. High and York High School. The Roosevelt School facebook page and the I grew up in Elmhurst IL facebook page are filled with fond memories of attending school there. Ms. Kuehnle describes Elmhurst as an average middle class town. I do not think there was anything average in the Elmhurst school system. Several years ago, my sister met with Mr. Winters and asked him if Roosevelt School was as special as she remembered it to be. His reply was yes, it was a very special school.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Really Enjoyed It By Dear Reader Let me say at the outset that I know the author. I'm even acknowledged at the beginning of the book. That said, I read the book for two reasons: curiosity, and out of a feeling of obligation towards a friend. I was thrilled to find out that I really enjoyed it.This is Doris Durbin's first book. She's a recently retired librarian who has always wanted to write, and now has the time to. When Doris emailed me that the book was published, she described it as "a romance/mystery/historical/Christian novel about a young former soldier and soon-to-be circuit rider and a desperate young woman traveling by train and wagon from Macon to north Georgia in 1875. There are murderers and counterfeiters, bootleggers and revenuers, all giving chase. I hope it will be part of a series."I'm not a reader of romances, or a reader of Christian fiction, so I started the book with a little trepidation. By the end of the first chapter I was hooked! First of all, events in the book move quickly. The Captain, the hero of the book, meets the desperate young woman in the first pages. She is indeed desperate, and the way that he helps her is unique and surprising. The action of the book, for the most part, takes place on the train trip, then a wagon trip, and there are bad guys giving chase all the way. In each chapter another crisis has to be resolved. I kept being reminded of Odyesseus' travails as he wound his way home. It's a page turner!Secondly, the characters are interesting and well developed. I found myself picking up the book when I should have been doing something else because I really wanted to know what was going to happen to them next. I'm still curious. The author wants this to be a trilogy, and I hope she continues to write. I'm curious to find out what happens to the characters in the next chapters of their lives.Now to address the Christian/romance aspect of the book: The book is Christian in that the Captain has become a minister and is on his way to the North Georgia mountains to accept a calling at a church, but that is the extent of the Christian aspect of the book. It is in no way preachy. I'm sure the Captain's Christianity is the reason for some of his actions, but he's also a multifaceted man who has a temper, finds a certain young woman awfully attractive, and he can use a gun as well as he can play the fiddle. As far as the romance goes, there is no ripping of bodices, for which I was grateful.Doris Durbin took pains to research and include accurate historical details that flesh out the telling of the story. Being a Georgian myself, I enjoyed learning some of the history of the state while reading the book.All in all, 5 stars! Bravo, Doris! Write another!

I had to pace myself. I hate to stop reading in the middle of a chapter. I just took my phone with me!To me the story was fast paced. Actually the entire story covers only a few days.The story seemed authentic to me. The details of the period seemed to work and the author wove a pleasantly heart warming story in the middle of mayhem!I am looking forward to reading more in this series.Congratulations Miss Durbin (it's her first book) visit the authors website. Beginning techniques on reading layouts and card meanings are covered on this book and this offers very detailed information on the Tarot. How Tarot cards work is a topic with many interpretations. Some claim the great number of people meditating on the cards and using them creates a collective energy around the cards. Others consider the cards to be tools of intuition, psychic phenomena, or a method of communication from spirit guides, among many other theories. Generally the cards are used in a "Tarot reading" or "psychic reading," where a reader will use intuition to select cards to lay on a table, and then allow those cards to guide the reading, using established card meanings and card imagery to guide psychic intuition or spiritual communication.

From different authors with numerous kind of approach to the topic. If you want an advice, i say you go for this book. This book was prepared in a very concise manner leaving the readers informed. Some books are full of misleading information unlike this one, only relevant information is given. In this book we can learn where tarot cards come from, what they mean, why tarot cards can work ... but instead should be used as a guide to help you make the decision yourself.

Well written for people who are new to Tarot By John Primus I downloaded this book because my daughter is interested in Tarot readings and I wanted to learn about her interest. This book was very interesting and provided me with a good understanding about Tarot. I gave this book 5 stars because it provided exactly what it promised. It provides a brief history of Tarot readings and the different deck styles. It provides information about the meaning of the cards and secrets to performing readings and how to master doing them.

40 of 42 people found the following review helpful. This is the size of a phone book, explanations for answers are given, which is what makes this stand above the rest. By Two kids mom Of course I had to weigh it, and it weighs 5 lbs 12 oz. This book is the size of a telephone directory.I am on my second kid taking these tests, so a fair number of prep books have cycled through our house. This is the physically largest one. Many test books will claim to have 10 or so tests, but only 2 are actually contained in the book and the rest are available online for you to print, with your paper and ink. This book is all print.Chapter 1 is an intro.Chapter 2 is a diagnostic test, so the student can find areas of strength or weakness.This book contains 610 English problems, 500 Math problems, 345 Reading problems and 343 Science problems with answers and EXPLANATIONS. It is that last part that is important because just having the answer is of no help whatsoever if you do not understand why you missed it. We had this issue with prep for my son, although I could figure out the answers for the math and science sections, I often had no idea about the logic behind the answers for punctuation problems. I checked the explanations for the math and science sections (as I can judge these) and found them clear and straightforward. One thing that drives me batty about the ACT is the science section, it really should be called “Can you read and interpret a table,chart or graph”. I really do not feel this measures “science” but that is not the fault of this book. The explanations given here were also fine.The paper is also nice, some of the books have paper that feels like old newsprint, this is not the quality of a reading book , but is fine for a one time use.The size of the book may be intimidating for students but it is excellent to have it all printed out. It is not exactly portable however, unless you are also weight training.And after you are done, you can use it as a booster seat for small children or short adults.

What I expected in a prep book By My Old KY Home There is a test at the begining of this book to use as a diagnostic test to figure out where you are (or where your child is) at before you even start. I found that to be a huge plus with the book. As others have mentioned this is probablly the largest prep book by way of size and content. It is full of questions and is comprehensive in the scope of the material. It is clearly difficult to know what books to buy and what courses to take so I have gotten several diffrent options for my son to prep for next year. I bought the book to of "real" past questions put together by the ACT company. Clearly old questions will never be on the test again, but at least I know those questions are good practice for how future test questions will be asked. The Manhattan book seems to have the questions written in a similair way to those questions and is very thourough with good explanations. So far I am very happy with the book, but it will take longer than 30 days for my son to get through the book. I will update my review after my son takes the exam this coming school year.

Buxman This is a hefty ACT resource that can help improve your scores and deliver a good workout, just from carrying it around. It might seem hard to find any utility in ACT preparations based on the weight of the book, but the fact of the matter is that getting high scores can be a matter of sheer volume. All 3 of my children have moved from the high 20's to the low 30's using a high volume study technique like this book delivers. My youngest son used this version for his last test and his results today were 3 points higher than his previous test. It's not glamorous or expensive, but it works.

The continuous learning is a process and it needs to be stored accordingly and the process has been written on this book. You can learn a lot of things beyond this book because it offers mastery skills beyond 20hours and if you come to think of the possibilities it can’t happen but when you read this book and follow the steps you’ll discover how powerful the book is. Goals and Dreams are also being set as a good example which tackles how to achieve it.

By Deborah While this is yet another collection of cliffhangers it is different in several ways, firstly not all the books are free which is usually the case, not all of them are available elsewhere at least not at the moment anyway, for example I couldn't find 'The Unseen Warrior' and while there's the ever present Chrissy Peebles and M.J May some of the others were new to me.This book also clearly states:'Some stories have been previously published. Some stories are novellas and some are full length. ***All stories are part one’s to other series*** As a courtesy, the authors inform you there are some stories with cliffhangers. These are the first books or prequels to individual series.'My advice is, while this is a great way to sample new authors just be aware of how long some this these series's are and how expensive they can be, I know I've been caught out in the past.

I enjoyed all the books in the collection and look forward to reading more. W.J. May is in this anthology so I highly recommend, she's an amazing writer. Thanks for making this free!
