Author Christopher Hepworth has proven that he can write an engaging and complex thriller with his last book, "The Sleepwalker Legacy", and I had no qualms about snapping up his latest release. The story of Sam Jardine, a master negotiator who has a knack for getting in the midst of international conspiracies. This one involves a crazy media tycoon and a group who wish to bring the Russian empire back in all its greatness and fury. Another well-written and very fun read from Hepworth that I would definitely recommend.

This not just a story about politics or nations in danger, and it is not just about morals and ethics – it is about so much more. Hepworth weaves a story line that demonstrates the differences in culture and societies and the differences in people.While struggling to acquire data base storage, Sam Jardine meets a list of characters that will try to seduce him, beat him, outsmart him and save him. Jardine has his moments where he is strong yet weak, smart yet one step behind. He is a complex character that is driven by past demons and failures.“She did not look back as the sounds of the old priest trying to break down the door of his side of the confessional box reverberated throughout the old church. She made a mental note to thank the carpenter for swapping the locks on the confessional box and adding the clasp to the grill just as she had instructed. … Natalya opened the heavy wooden doors of the old church and closed them behind her just as the grenade exploded with a ‘whump.’ The blast vaporized the confessional box and the old priest, …”Hepworth writes strong women into his books and he does it well. The above quote taken from the book demonstrates Natalya’s thirst for vengeance and strength to carry it out as well as intelligence. Trust me when I say the priest was not as he appeared and deserved his fate. Harsh? Read it and find out! No one is truly as they appear and that is what keeps it nail biting and intense.Hepworth has done it again. An excellent story told in rich details and descriptions. I loved it! I could not put it down. Hepworth does not allow the reader to get lost, rather he builds a strong connection between his characters and readers. You can not only see the Cossacks on the ridge, but you can feel the fear they induce and jubilation of Jardine when he sees them.I look forward to more writings by Christopher Hepworth!

Descriptive and Attention Holding, Unable to Put Down By sarvar The Nocnista Agenda by Christopher Hepworth touches on the importance of one’s ancestors among other issues. Hepworth both in Nocnista and Sleepwalker Legacy demonstrates that one’s ancestors are very much a piece of our daily lives although we may not realize it.“My great grandmother Alice was born there.Her mother was rumored to be a Cossack.”It is this connection that allows Jardine to move about Donetsk unscathed. Plus this one connection allows him to be under the protection of thousands upon thousands of Cossacks throughout the story. Filled with political intrigue, the fear of failure, and romance – Jardine has to move carefully. There is a serial killer, a dangerous cult and political intrigue mixed with romance. All executed excellently!Character development is realistic and thought provoking. Not many authors create strong willed women that affect a nation like Hepworth. While Jardine struggles with women and his uncertainties, he is a character one can relate to easily. Well written with realistic dialog. The Nocnista Agenda is descriptive and attention holding; no holes in the plot or characters.If you want light fun reading, this is not the book for you. If you want to be engaged, clutching to the edge of your seat, then this is the book!If you want to be engaged, clutching to the edge of your seat, then this is the book.

Wonderfully amazing story with darling illustrations!I purchased it for my 8 year old daughter. She absolutely loved it and couldn't stop reading it! She loved the pictures so much and has been drawing pictures of the princess and the wizard every day since. I highly recommend this book to any boy or girl!I run a day-care of 4-5 year old children and have been reading chapters to them.They love it too!!I already ordered several more copies of the book and plan on giving it as a gift for birthday parties!

My daughter absolutely loved all the color, butterflies, and the beautiful princess! My son loves that it related to him in school work and he adored Mr. Wizard:). I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Not only are the illustrations amazing but it also teaches responsibility. Great read for myself(Mom) as well. I shared with all my colleagues and they also adored it! Can't wait for what is yet to come!

Thoughtful, genre-hopping sci-fi/western adventure that will keep you guessing By Daniel Mayer (Full disclosure: I'm a Patreon sponsor of Alex Shaw's podcasts, and so received a free copy of this ebook. I was not asked to review the book, I just wanted to give my honest opinion of it. Also, my initial experience of the story was in audio drama form, and there are a few subtle differences in dialogue and presentation between the ebook and audio drama, but the content is mostly unchanged.)Set in an alternate version of the United States shortly after the Civil War, in a world gripped by a mysterious infection that turns humans into vicious feral beasts, Secret Rooms follows the stories of Captain Annie Oakley, Sergeant Frank Butler, and Privates Abigail Grey and James Penrose in their efforts to rebuild a country fallen into chaos and rally more people to their cause. New recruits Abigail and James are our principal windows into this strange world. The events that unfold present a mixture of action, suspense, and humor, but the focus is squarely on the interactions of the characters and the difficult moral choices they face.Being a work adapted from audio-drama, the majority of this book is dialogue and narration. It's presented as a series of journal entries and occasional transcriptions of audio recordings. (The Cartographers possess devices called Voxtubes, which would predate the invention of similar audio recording technology in the real world by quite a bit of time, but they seem to be presented as an intentional deviation from the timeline of the real world, and likely not the last we'll see) As such, there is relatively little description given of characters and events, though there are wonderful illustrations of the principal characters that we spend the most time with. Especially in later action sequences, the reader is expected to be able to follow what's happening based mostly on cues from the characters. This isn't one to speed-read.Between that and the heady (and often lengthy) conversations the characters regularly have, I would definitely say this can make for a challenging read, but for me at least this is a selling point rather than a detractor. If you prefer something with a heavier focus on action and imagery than on dialogue, this book might be a little drier than you would like, but if the setting intrigues you at all I highly encourage giving it a try.I have to be intentionally vague when describing the plot because this is definitely a story that plays with its cards kept close to the chest. There are some readers who may find the plot developments in the latter half of the book unbelievable or out of place based on what they had seen so far, but there is an internal consistency to all of it which was hinted at in the previous volume, The Cartographer's Handbook. However, fans of the New Century series like myself love this aspect of it, and I can't in good conscience fault a suspense story for having a surprise ending that was "too" surprising.Speaking of The Cartographer's Handbook, it is referenced many times during Secret Rooms, and while I don't think the reader has to experience the Handbook first to appreciate the world it describes, it does provide a lot of context for what's going on. I encourage newcomers to the series to start with Secret Rooms, but if they find themselves feeling like they're drowning, it may be worth reading or listening to the Handbook first to get some additional context, though its presentation will likely make Secret Rooms seem widely accessible by comparison.Lastly, I'll confess some amount of bias as I was a fan of Alex's work even before being introduced to this series. Nonetheless, if I thought the book was crap I would have said so. I thoroughly loved Secret Rooms and everything else I've seen and heard from the New Century series so far. It's clever and thought-provoking, and loaded with complicated engrossing characters I was happy to spend time with. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Characters from the world of The Cartographer's Handbook are incredibly bold, varied, and rich in personality (I don't think you HAVE to read Cartographer's first, but I would definitely read both of them close together to get the full experience). Abigail, James, and Annie are all strong leading characters, and I enjoyed getting to know them. I don't want to say much about the plot because I don't want to spoil anything, but if you enjoy a blend of history, science fiction, and a touch of horror, this is a great book to try.I also first experienced this content through the audio drama of the same name via iTunes. I thoroughly enjoyed the text version on its own, but I would highly recommend the audio to go with it.

By Iain Hopwood Secret Rooms as quickly become one of my all-time favorite books, with a brilliant cast of characters, a brilliant cast of characters and a plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. If you are a fan of Firefly, Avatar the Last Airbender, Battlestar Galatica, His Dark Materials, World War Z, Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter then there is something in this series for you.

If you enjoy testing yourself before an anatomy exam or practical, I highly recommend these cards. I have not found any issues yet with accuracy. The board-style questions at the bottom of some of the cards are also very helpful.

From the Author Spirit of the Highway is a shorter, more lightweight novel than my other books, which sometimes run to more than 400 pages. I hope younger readers might enjoy it, or anyone who wants a quicker, lighter read. The story itself naturally fell into three parts and so it made sense to divide the narrative into three books of about 200 pages each, and form a trilogy. Each book is a stand-alone story with a different main character, but each book features Abi, Katherine and Ralph, building towards a climax in the third book. I hope the subject matter will appeal to younger readers of historical fiction - but that is not to say adults won't enjoy it too!Shadow on the Highway is already out from Endeavour Press, and I am working on the final part of the story, featuring Katherine Fanshawe, Lady of the Highway.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heart-breaking account of England after the Civil War By Amazon Customer Spirit of the Highway is a captivating account of post-Civil War England. Deborah Swift paints a moving picture of love and adventure but also loss and struggle that always follow in the wake of a conflict of such magnitude. Having grown up reading about the Civil War in Alexandre Dumas' novels, I found Spirit of the Highway fascinating and difficult to put down. It's one of those books that transport the reader to another time from the very first page. The narrative is fast-paced, moving swiftly from bloodshed of the battlefield to everyday life in post-war England, depicting the conflict between the Royalists and Cromwell's supporters, as well as hardships that both sides were facing after the war.I was surprised to find out from Author's Notes that Katherine Fanshawe was a real historical personage. As soon as I finished the book, I had to learn everything I possibly could about her. Turns out her story is as fascinating as any work of fiction could aspire to be. She is the legendary Wicked Lady. Having been born to wealth and fortune, she lost everything after the Civil War. Falling in love with a highwayman, she lived a life of crime. Knowing that one of the characters really existed has made Spirit of the Highway even more real and exciting.I majored in French history at University and most of my reading is limited to Napoleonic times and World War II. Spirit of the Highway has definitely ignited my interest in British history. The book is well-written and extremely well researched. The period detail brings this story to life, just like its strong and believable characters - heroes and villains that practically leap off the page. Although Spirit of the Highway is classified as Young Adult, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

By Margaret @ JustOneMoreChapter I was very excited to hear the sequel to Shadow on the Highway was in the works, especially that my wait wouldn't be long. Deborah Swift is a favorite of mine, her books The Lady's Slipper, The Gilded Lily and A Divided Inheritance were books that I really enjoyed. They took me to another place and time, had me totally captivated, hence why I was excited to find out Spirit of the Highway was being released.The Highway Trilogy is YA, it's a genre that lacks really good historical fiction - those with not just a good story but that you can lean the time period in an enjoyable and entertaining fashion. Spirit of the Highway is the 2nd book in the series. It definitely works as a stand alone, but I recommend book one, Shadow on the Highway, just because it's really good and tells the story of Abigail which I found very interesting.Spirit on the Highway is told from the POV of Ralph, his spirit that is. At first I thought what a unique prospective until I finally grasped what that meant. It really is a different approach, though at times I forgot about the spirit and then waited for a miracle of some sorts. It wasn't until I was reading the authors note that I really appreciated this POV. More on those notes shortly.There were a variety of characters here, some I liked and others not so much. With different and unique personalities Swift skillfully wove a story showing the various repercussions of war. From those that fought, those left behind, those on a mission for themselves along with the women left behind to struggle on their own. This book didn't hold much back in the way of details back in 1651, not just the struggles and hardships endured but a bleak future as well. Her knowledge of this time is evident here and her writing style makes it easy to get absorbed in the story.The Authors Notes explains that Katherine Fanshawe is a real historical figure which adds more life to this story. In regards ghosts/spirits Deborah Swift wrote a few pages entitled 'Ghosts of the Seventeenth Century' which I found just as interesting as the book and has me looking forward to the next/final installment in this series, Lady of the Highway (set for a 2016 release).Though YA I feel this series would be enjoyed by adults as well.

However, I believe the book is written for an older teen and not a younger teen. The language and romantic elements are not appropriate for my granddaughter's age (6th grade), but more for high school age. This is the only aspect of the book that I had a "red flag."Spirit Of The Highway is a story of sacrifice, passion, and internal conflict. Ralph and Kate are in an impossible situation. They are from different social classes. They are from differing political factions. During this period in history marriage is not a choice, but arranged by families. Throughout the story their plight is the strongest opposition. The political climate is an opposition, but the attraction and relationship Ralph and Kate have for each other drew me in emotionally, and carried me through to the last page.Spirit Of The Highway is not written for a strong history lesson, but with the intent of showing two young people in an impossible relationship during the English Civil War. The year for the story is 1651, and this was the last year of the war.

She grew up with nothing, but wants to make her life better. She has put herself through college without loans. Now she must seek get a job to finish her education. Her future Stepfather makes her an offer she can't refuse. The hitch, she has to work for her Alpha, womanizing, hot, and sexy future stepbrother, Damon. Bethany is strong and believes she can overcome whatever Damon dishes out. Except, Bethany didn't factor in the attraction she would have for Damon.The sexual tension between characters is thick. I was fanning myself through most of the book. The dramatic build up between the characters kept me reading through dinner. I couldn't put the book down until I was done! I can't wait to see what happens in the second book.
