6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Joyous Departure By JEP This was a great read and well worth stepping out of the usual genre that I read. If it were possible, this world of angels doing good to mere mortals while scaring the perps sh*tless would be where I would like to end up. Had I not been so comfortably seated I would be at the edge of my seat. I never put it down unless I had to and when it was over I wanted to read on. Those are the markings of a great read for me.It was a great departure from my usual romance novels and would recommend this book without hesitation.All the best for the sequels which I look forward to with bated breath.

It has a quite literally colourful cast of characters, and a plot that moves at a nice pace, while keeping you guessing about what will happen next. I recommend it to fantasy lovers who enjoy angels vs demons stories with a bit of romance thrown in.*Note: I was given a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but this in no way influenced the contents of my review, nor did it affect the rating I decided to give the book.

Original story with complicated characters, a real page turner By Kitty Smith "Fledgling" puts a fresh face on the world of angels and delivers an intriguing blend of romance and Good vs Evil conflict. The pace is just fast enough to keep things exciting but not so much that you get left behind. Katrina Cope's training in martial arts and combat sports results in fight and action scenes that are both intense and realistic.Fledgling is a generic name assigned to the lead character, more indicative of her status than anything else. She is one of ten nameless, freshly graduated angels, their human names lost forever and their proven names yet to be assigned. They are what they are because their past three lives all ended abruptly and in violence. Now they'll be tasked with protecting those who are what they once were, and punishing the guilty by inserting a conscience into them. If she breaks the rules she'll be placed in the abyss, probably for life.The story is a real page turner, the kind that will keep you up way past your usual bedtime. I know a lot of people gripe about first person, present tense POV but when it's done right it has a way of putting you directly into the story. I think Cope did a great job on this score and I really enjoyed the way the story flows. Fledgling is a complicated character and as her horrible past is slowly revealed you get a real understanding of why she is the way she is. I am absolutely excited to read the next book and see where this story goes.

With 113 in the book (all in color) they feature this vital part of the human body in all sorts of combinations. Similar themed posters are featured together, for example, writing a message on a hand has five on a spread, an adult holding a babies hand features four on a spread, the hand as a fist has five but oddly Lord Kitchener's famous and much copied 1914 'Britain wants you' army recruitment poster isn't included on the spread with five pointing finger versions.The graphic interpretation of the hand by designers is quite comphensive: hand prints; holding hands; x-ray hands; pensioner hands; claw like hands; hands holding pencils, knives, bottles, phones; cigarettes et cetera. The posters throughout the book are mostly European and date from 1919 to 2010, each has a brief caption with a numerical listing in the back pages giving more technical details.This is the twenty-seventh book in the poster series and nicely they are all the same size and format. Practising designers and students will be stimulated by the creative work in these pages.

I taught 3rd to 5th grade Recorder and each day I used this book to teach my students. A Cd comes with the book and both were the perfect tool to each my students beginning recorder. I recommend this book to ANYONE who wants to learn the recorder. It seriously was the best beginning book / program for teaching my students that I have found. I love the music in the book and my students couldn't wait for Recorder class. I tell you honestly that this book is Fantastic. In learning any instrument it is 10% knowledge, 90 % practice with that in mind this book really does make learning the recorder easy and gradual.

It is difficult to follow the pieces since there is no printed materials. Looks like there is version for sale with a book - I should have probably gotten that one.

This book is not a political statement. There is no judgement. Rather, a collection of gently written stories conveying the emotions of a highly charged era in history. Your heart aches for the casualties, sons, husbands and fathers, lost to war. It aches for the tortured souls that are left behind to cope with the emptiness. There is a melancholy tone thruout the book which lends credibility to her story telling. The harsh realities of war are written about with sensitivity and compassion, making her characters all the more memorable.. The author has packed a lot of emotions into this short collection of stories. She has even introduced a few unlikely heroes. Pet dogs and even a little rat who happily followed their humans into war. Their enduring loyalty will move you to tears.Shirl makes her home on the hallowed ground of Gettysburg, in a farmhouse of historical designation. The energy there has certainly served as inspiration for this latest book. I doubt you will soon forget her characters, many of which will leave you misty eyed. Along with her stories, the poetry is amazing..Take an afternoon and relax with this book. I can guarantee, it will be time well spent. I was so drawn into the beautifully haunting stories that I could not put it down. Thank you, Shirl, for sharing your stories, poems, and artwork. I was especially drawn to the picture of Sallie and the Irish Wolfhound. Civil War Sallie reminds me of my Molly, a little bull terrier mix, who adopted us years ago. Shirl's book is a treasure to be experienced and revisited time after time.

Ingles and his young wife experience heartbreaking loss when an Indian raid on their isolated homestead results in the death of two of their three young children. From a disastrous attempt to shoot the rapids at Muscle Shoals with two greenhorns to a brutal bar fight in Natchez, Thomas Ingles blazes a trail across the southeastern territories as they are being settled. Heath Ingles, his Opawawka from the future, has his own battles to face. Participating in Thomas' struggle for survival between two warring cultures teaches Heath invaluable lessons that help him win back the girl he loves, come to terms with a disapproving father, and make some sense of his own existence. I enjoy historical, sci-fi and some fantasy and this novel covered it all. It kept me interested right to the very end.I remember getting The Plains of Abraham (1928, James Oliver Curwood) as one of our English books in high school and found it so interesting that I took it home with me instead of leaving it in my locker with the other text books. It was the one book that really got me hooked on reading.Worlds Apart reawakened that experience for me. I couldn't put it down. It's based on a true story with enough historical fact to make it easily believable. The idea of having a present day relative as narrator who participates in history as it is happening is a neat twist. The parallel plot lines jump quickly between past and present but the writing is good and both plots flow smoothly.Lots of action, romance and adventure against a strong historical background – I spent days immersed in the American frontier and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Again, Bondurant breaks away from the normal workplace romance. This isn’t a lust at first sight book where the weak woman falls at the feet of her boss. Their relationship is based on years of friendship. Sasha is a remarkably strong and successful woman and has a fabulously quick-wit tongue. Brian is more easy going and enjoys Sasha’s challenging smart mouth. While he may have a laid-back personality, he surprisingly demands control in the bedroom. However, he’s not into pain play. He’s all about pleasurable torture, making the steamy scenes very HOT. Also, he notes that he’s not opposed to Sasha’s occasional desire of control when she states, “Maybe I want to be spontaneous and take you in my mouth without permission some morning.”There’s tons of humor woven throughout the story – too many to quote, but here’s one:Sasha gives Brian’s 22 year-old sister advice on what to do if the man she is attracted to does’t feel the same, “Okay, You get a big glass of wine, buy yourself a good vibrator, and you say to hell with him. If he can’t realize that you’re a catch, McKensie, then it’s his loss.”There’s well-written drama from all directions: family, work, and of course the relationship.The happily-ever-after included a few delightful twists that left me smiling for days.

WHAT AN AMAZING STORY!Sasha Brooks has been focused on having a great career her whole life. Now she's newly promoted as a Vice President in a New York City advertising company. She's beautiful, driven, and fierce, but she's hiding a huge secret that she won't let anyone close enough to find out about. Brian Carpenter has had a secret thing for his newest VP, but Sasha won't let anyone close to her. For 8 years, they have flirted, but she won't let it get any further, until she believes he's with someone else, so she finally takes a chance and says something. So Brian proposes an arrangement with set rules. Will Sasha finally be able to let go of control?I never know what to expect when I read an author new to me, but Ask Me Something blew me away. The character development is fantastic, with an addicting, well written story line that flows very smoothly. Aubrey Bondurant does a fantastic job hooking me from the beginning, and holding me hostage until I finished. Her talented writing style pulled out my emotions like I was physically in the story, with well placed humor that had me laughing hard. The chemistry is tangible, which made the sexy scenes FIERY HOT, and hot flash worthy. I simply CANNOT WAIT to read more from this author, so I happily HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Hyperbolic, Hilarious Book By S.F. Brians Quite simply, this is a fantastically written book. The plot is satisfyingly intricate and complemented by characters which are marvellously-drawn and almost universally loathsome. Its satirical bent is hardly subtle, but it is equally undeniably hilarious. Where it really shines is in the superb prose, which not only illuminates the above qualities deftly, but also draws forth appreciation for the near-virtuoso use of language itself. Clockman might be accused of lapsing into polemic in places, but given that such efforts are placed into the mouths of academics, such diatribes are both fitting and extremely entertaining. The repeated references to contemporary mass-media in overt ways (such as characters' fixations on television series which echo and inform their actions and motivations) and more subtle ways (such as the use of cinematic descriptions both instantial and as meta-description) are quite delightful. I read this in a single sitting, and have no doubt that I will do so again in the near future.

From Publishers Weekly Historian and school director Cutler has examined PTA minutes and local publications from the mid-19th century to the present to write an intimate history of the ambiguous and symbiotic relationship between home and school. This is in many ways a story about gender and classAand, eventually, race. "Schools often had to fight the perception that they taught children to disrespect their families," but often educators and reformers "agreed that many parents could no more be trusted with their children's health than with their education." Immigrant and working-class parents in particular have been distrusted: Cutler shows how some social workers have been unapologetic in "wanting the school to reform the family." After WW II, the schools tried to build trust and communication with the home and, Cutler argues, "paid a high price for not living up to expectations." The reciprocity between home and school broke down as the larger society went through upheavals, and the PTA came to be seen as part of the failing system. (Although Cutler points out that "fathers' clubs were not at all uncommon in the early history of home and school associations," the principal work of the PTA has always been carried out by mothers: "men were often made to feel unwelcome.") With the "demise of the intimate social networks that used to bind the home to the school," strife and strikes increased through the 1970s. Now, Cutler warns, parents and teachers must "become more realistic about what can be reasonably expected from their cooperation" to avoid repeating a "cycle of failure." Obviously, historical perspective is one part of our grapplings with that issue.Unfortunately, this book has a very narrow scope. The author usually uses the word "school" to mean "public school," so he has very little to say about private or parochial education, or the home-schooling movement.Still, he makes an important point. The public school establishment, administrators and teachers alike, constitutes in many ways a distinct social class, with its own view of the world, and a view that is at odds with the views of many parents. Thus, conflicts between parents and teachers, even on some seemingly trivial points (how much homework? what kind of Christmas decorations should be allowed) is necessarily a political struggle.The public-schooling establishment sees itself as the bearer of some high altruistic apolitical virtue. But that attitude is just one political fact among others.

Driscoll Fascinating reading on the history of education - especially the interplay between home and school. The rise of the PTA, educators' belief that they should train people to be better parents, government's assumptions about the role of education in society, who really know best, all make for an interesting exploration of a complex subject. The book is sometimes a little hard to follow as the author moves back and forth in time frequently rather than taking a strictly chronological approach. Overall a very useful contribution to understanding the continuing struggle between home and school.

It is of particular importance today with the public schools being attacked from every angle. By looking at today's issues with the historical perspective presented by Dr. Cutler, one gains deep insights into the purpose of public schools and their importance in American society. Dr. Cutler's ability to take a vast amount of research and to present it in a very readable format is a credit to his writing skills and scholarship. It should be read by all teachers, administrators and anyone researching issues in public education.

If you are aiming for a 750+ on the GRE, this is the book for you, along with the following from the same series.EZ Logic and Stats booksEZ Advanced WorkbookEZ StrategiesThe following pros and cons refer to the workbook only.PROS: The questions are probably just slightly easier than the hardest of questions you may face on the actual exam, so they are good for review. Explanations are brief (pro if you are reviewing and make mistakes due to carelessness, con if you are trying to learn concepts for the first time).CONS: Needs more problems and it would help to split up the sections as multiple practice tests as opposed to by topic. Gets expensive if you try to buy the whole set.The above 3 books are basically all that are needed for those that have a solid grasp of all math subjects but need some review before taking the GRE.About the reviewer: 790 Quantitative, 4 days of intense study.

By Emmet Caulfield I've worked my way through this book from cover to cover and found dozens of errors along the way. There are a few silly typos and ambiguities very early on, and this sort of "sets the tone" for what you expect later on: you quickly learn not to trust the questions, much less the solutions. Obvious typos are one thing, but a number of the questions are so badly-phrased that they are ambiguous. You shouldn't have to guess what the question means!Worse still, in a number of cases, the *solutions* are just plain wrong. One question begins "A positive number, n, ..." then the solution solves a quadratic to get n=-1.25. Aside from that kind of obvious stupidity, there are more subtle errors in the solutions of the kind that the GRE relies on -- overlooking possibilities, making erroneous assumptions, and misreading the question. For example, the very last question in the book is about 7 books on a shelf having a total of 777 pages, no book is shorter than 90 pages, the 1st 5 books have an average of 105 pages, what's the longest any of the 7 can be? The solution subtracts 525 for the 1st 5, then considers only the last two books and gets 162 pages, ignoring the possibility that 4 of the 1st 5 are 90 pages and the 5th 165 pages. Some solutions don't answer the question that was actually asked, another thing that the GRE hammers on. In quite a few cases, the solution is extremely naive "longhand", not done in the quick way that you expect a GRE book, particularly an advanced one, to use. In at least one case, the intersection of two quadratics is found by solving the two of them independently and looking for common roots, rather than equating and simplifying.Although it's a rather poor book, it is one of very few sources of reasonably "hard" questions, since most of the other prep books are very much aimed at the middle ground of those working toward an average score. It could be a lot worse.
