The Wichita Indians shared the Great Plains, in the central United States, with a variety of animals, including millions of bison, elk, and birds. The Wichita built their homes of poles and prairie grass, which grew up to 12 feet tall. These unique, beehive-shaped grass houses were exclusive to the Wichita, housed extended families, and could last up to 14 years. Tools, fashioned from chert and bison bones, were used to construct homes and cultivate garden plots.

"King Athan has been happy in his little kingdom, a hundred leagues north and east of the great city-states of Athens and Sparta. It was true he had stolen the kingdom of Dassaria, but it was his now, and he meant to make it a good place to live for his subjects. Blessed with a magical amulet, he has stopped aging and so believes he has all the time in the world. Athan, however, is learning that being a king is a lot harder and much more dangerous than he ever imagined. He and his men must face challenges ranging from the mundane to the desperate. His little kingdom must fight to survive against foes near and far―in particular, the mighty Archimedean Empire, who are out to conquer whole region. Turning back the forces of the empire is just one of King Athan’s problems. Dassaria is once again threatened by an upstart would-be tyrant, and the king must mobilize his small army and find a way to eliminate this menace. Meanwhile, Athan finds love―and soon discovers the downside of his agelessness. In this fantasy novel, the third in a series, an ageless king faces threats to his kingdom, discovers true love, and learns that change is inevitable, even for the seemingly immortal."

While this book can definitely be read standalone, it is the third book in the series and you will get a lot more out of it if you read the first two books before the third. It is hard not to fall in love with the characters, I found myself anxiously wondering how they would get out of their latest scrape, and what would happen next. I highly recommend this book and in fact the entire Chronicles of Athan series.

Rimkunas I had been working with an old original version of this book, but the layout and organization were awkward and frustrating. You were constantly flipping around. I have no idea why language books were so non-linear 100+ years ago. That being said, the content is fantastic. It is the antithesis of Wheelock in it's method. It explains grammar well, assuming just a rudimentary remembrance of it from high school. The sentences aren't inane and boring, and it is motivating to know that I am being prepped specifically to read Caesar's Gallic Campaign. The text is clear and easy to read, the typeset is a good size and the exercises are given immediately after grammar points and vocabulary. The answer key is available for free on Textkit.com, as well as forums aimed specifically at this text. All in all a great set of resources to anyone wanting to learn Latin on their own. The binding and pages are of high quality and the appendices and grammar reviews are very well done. Get this book and you will have no excuses.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Incredible By Amazon Customer If you are remotely considering learning Latin, go with this classic. Having learned Greek years ago, I wondered if Latin would be a smooth transition. When my daughter showed interest in learning Latin (I already gave her a year of Greek), I thought, yeah, let's take the plunge. We are both immersed in both languages now and loving the ride. D'ooge puts the language at fingertip access. We love the exercises both Latin to English and English to Latin. There is an answer key available for download for free. I recommend it. There is also a teacher's manual for purchase. I DO NOT recommend the teacher's manual. It contains no extra material and basically just says do the exercises... Equipped with the answer key, the teacher's manual becomes redundant.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Great Textbook! By Lev T. The lessons are easy to follow. The grammar is explained in an acessable way. You can't go wrong with this book especially considering its free. I suggest you download it now!

He's nice. He's the eldest son of Victorian England's most notorious rogue, but Storm Deverell just wants to keep life simple. Unlike the other members of his wild tribe, he steers clear of scandal and leads an honest, hard-working existence on a Cornish farm. Of course, it hasn't always been that way. In the days of youthful rebellion, that hot Deverell temper earned Storm a bad reputation. But now he keeps his anger tamed so well nobody would ever know it's still there. All things considered, Storm has everything he wants, whenever he wants it, in his uncomplicated world. And even if life is a little quiet sometimes, at least it's predictable. Until a strange woman arrives to shatter his unchallenged bachelor tranquility. Stubborn, proudly independent and apparently immune to his infamous charm, Katherine Kelly is a disruption, a sharp-tongued, haughty madam, and the last thing he needs moving in as his neighbor. One touch of her smooth hands tells him she knows nothing about managing a farm. One glance at her rose-embroidered stockings warns him she'll cause a commotion. Good thing he's not looking for trouble these days. She's naughty. Escaping a seedy, gas-lit world of deception and villainy with a spinet full of stolen banknotes and snuff boxes, Kate is seeking a new beginning and a better future for her son. She's come a long way to find sanctuary and fresh air, so that frustratingly calm, self-satisfied, straight-talking farmer in the next valley will not spoil it for her. Clearly he's ruled the roost around here far too long, a local legend in his own mind. So what if Deverell believes a woman can't survive without a man? Surviving is something this single mother knows how to do. One touch of his rough hands tells her he's dangerous. One glance into his blue eyes warns her he'll be a distraction. Good thing she's not looking for trouble these days. But these two headstrong, accidental neighbors will soon learn that trouble can find them without being sought. Because what's "nice" can also be naughty, and what's naughty.... is usually a Deverell.

Suffers in comparison with True Love, but still worth a read By Danker Fresina's latest story, Storm, has a tough task, because its predecessor in this series, True Story, is just so good. True Story's main protagonists, Olivia and True, are top notch characters who become involved in a romance with a number of enticing elements that are out of the ordinary. Additionally, in True Story Fresina delivers witty exchanges, highly passionate scenes and swoon-worthy utterances. So Fresina's main competition when considering her latest story isn't with other authors. It is with her own work.Comparison with True Love does not prove to be in Storm's favour. In no way does the latter surpass, or even equal the quality of the former. For example (unlike True Story) the plot in Storm is predominately derivative - much too similar to that of many other HRs.The characters in Storm also aren't as powerful, or as well drawn. Fresina deliberately makes the h, Katherine, somewhat unlikeable. She is depicted as defensive, prickly, verbally aggressive, quick to take offence and slow to offer thanks, even when rescued. Well and good, as a first position, but before the inevitable HEA Fresina needs to make the reader warm to her, and I don't think she pulls this off (maybe because Katherine's partial transformation comes too late in the story). And this is significant, because it lessens the power of the romance. It is good to see True and Olivia again, but even they seem diminished in intensity.Katherine's child is cute, but again highly similar to cute kids in many other HRs.Storm is the most successful character. I soon felt a soft spot for him. He is much more likeable than Catherine and Fresina does a better job of getting her readers inside his head. Storm works hard, not just at tending his land and controlling his underlying capacity for belligerence, but also in helping his friends and neighbours. He rescues people and animals in trouble - so, of course he is worth admiring. While he doesn't come close to being as complex, alluring, dynamic and gorgeous as his Dad, Storm's innate decency and kindness do make him special. In particular, I like the way he reacts to the death of one of the characters in the story, walking away from the crass comment made by one of his half brothers to berate himself for what he could have done differently.Storm isn't a bad book. It just doesn't shine like True Love. In parts (especially the dialogue that showcases Fresina's talent for amusing repartee) I loved Storm. However, for the reasons described above, I was, at times, also disappointed in it.Irrespective, I still consider it a solid 3 1/2 to 4, mainly because of Storm (the character) and also because of Fresina's clever writing. So, despite some relatively minor quibbles, I'm now eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.I did not receive a free copy of this book. I paid for it. And I don't regret the purchase.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I Loved It! By Di Love those good-boys-with-naughty-thoughts types. I also liked the heroine, who had been hurt too many times by men. Her independence felt more believable to me than many other female protagonist's. And as always, Jayne Fresina's writing lightens my world, makes me smile, and brings so much pleasure. Can't wait for the next one!

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I really disliked her. A lot By Blue Rose Storm is the oldest son, though illegitimate, of True Deverell, and part of the scandalous Deverell family. He is content with his country living, his animals, and occasional female companionship. His peace is disturbed by a strange woman, who shows up on his land, trying to cross a stream, over a washed out bridge, and gets stuck. Storm tries to help, but the woman refuses, until it's clear she has no other options available. It turns out that a mutual friend, the late Reverend Cole, suggested that this part of Cornwall would be an ideal place for Kate to make a new start.Katherine (Kate) Kelly has been used and abused, and wants to get away from London, the tawdry life she's been living, and make a new life for her and her son, Flynn. If she financed this trip with ill gotten gains, well, she tells herself, it's only what she's owed. And she certainly doesn't need a too handsome farmer flirting with her. So Storm's attempts at rescue and friendliness are rebuffed, and his compliments are thrown back in his face.Kate has a major chip on her shoulder, and I have to admit that for the first half of the book, I really disliked her. A lot. I didn't like the way she kept everyone at a distance and was overly stern with her young son. She came off as cold and haughty. Eventually I came to see how badly she had been treated her whole life, and that she was only trying to protect herself and Flynn.Eventually, the sexy and charming Storm wears down her resistance, and they begin to form a friendship which looks very promising. But as fate would have it, the past comes back to haunt Kate. Someone recognizes Kate from London, and tells Storm about her past life, with much exaggeration. As they struggle with this new wrinkle in their fledgling relationship, all hell breaks loose around them. Despite the ensuing chaos, the last part of this book was pure delight, and had a bit of everything There was mystery, murder, threats, villains, proposals, mayhem, and, yes, finally, romance. I enjoyed STORM very much, and look forward to the upcoming stories of the other members of the scandalous Deverell family.

By ABetensley44 I haven't been able to stop thinking about this book since I read it a few weeks ago. Fitzpatrick manages to weave history, romance, and classic Biblical themes into this novella about a man and the consequences of one fateful decision. I'm still haunted by some of the passages. Terrific read. Cannot wait to see what else Fitzpatrick will write.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very Short Story With Promise By S. L. This short story reads very much like an account of a family history, maybe an outline of a true event. I wish I knew something about Ms Waters. Why did she write this story? Is it based on her own family history? Is this story going to be rewritten and fleshed out? When did Harold meet Nancy? What were his thoughts when they first met? What were Nancy's? Why were they so in love? This story has so much potential. I hope Ms Waters dives in and fills in all the mysterious details. I would definitely like to know Harold and Nancy better and I hope I get the chance to.

If the writer would of added more details to the story and more background about the characters it would of been a great book. I really enjoyed reading it if it was longer story it would of been great.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Give it a read. By Barney Overall it was a cute story, somewhat predictable and dealt with the history of the depleting silver mines. It could be applied to many aspects of life today of people overspending and thinking money is inexhaustible. Give it a read.

For fans of Atonement, Birdsong, and Downton Abbey, the first of three novels about a privileged British family enduring the trials of World War I, from New York Times bestselling author Kate Williams.

In the idyllic early summer of 1914, life is good for the de Witt family. Rudolf and Verena are planning the wedding of their daughter Emmeline, while their eldest son, Arthur, is studying in Paris, and Michael is just back from his first term at Cambridge. Celia, the youngest of the de Witt children, is on the brink of adulthood and secretly dreams of escaping her carefully mapped-out future and exploring the world. But the onslaught of war changes everything and soon the de Witts find themselves sidelined and in danger of losing everything they hold dear. As Celia struggles to make sense of the changing world around her, she lies about her age to join the war effort and finds herself embroiled in a complex plot that puts not only herself but those she loves in danger. With gripping detail and brilliant empathy, Kate Williams tells the story of Celia and her family as they are shunned by a society that previously embraced them, torn apart by sorrow, and buffeted and changed by the storms of war.

The Storms of War: A Novel, by Kate Williams

Review “Touching on topics as wide ranging as the horrors of trench warfare, battlefield hospitals, women-volunteer ambulance drivers, women’s suffrage, and blatant discrimination, this detailed, descriptive novel brings an era to life. As atmospheric as Anne Perry’s WWI books and as spellbinding as Ken Follett’s Fall of Giants.” (Booklist (starred))“Quietly impressive. It echoes of classic novels (Atonement, Brideshead Revisited). Lots of books - both fiction and non-fiction - have been published. One, Kate Williams's, "The Storms of War", follow a British/German family living in England into their wartime life. It's a good book, and will appeal to the viewers of Downton Abbey and readers of the Ken Follett's 20th Century trilogy. Kate Williams notes that "The Storms of War" is the first in a series, with the next novel being published in 2015.To write a saga, an author has to invent a family. That family should have many family members - children, grandparents, siblings - and each member should possess a good, juicy story that will keep the reader turning the pages, always wanting to know "what happens". It helps if the family is wealthy and adding staff to the mix is always advisable. In "Storms", Kate Williams, who is also the author of some non-fiction, gives us the deWitt family. Father Rudolf is a German who emigrated to England in the 1890's, built up wealth in "trade" (in this case, of meat), and married the daughter of low-level aristocrats. They had four children - two boys and two girls - and three out of the four are featured in the novel, which begins in 1914 and ends in 1918. One of the sons becomes a soldier in 1914 - assuming he'd "be back by Christmas" - while the two daughters balance suitors - some acceptable and others not - and help out the war effort. One becomes an ambulance driver in France and the other gives aid to men who are hiding to avoid war service. Almost every thing is touched upon in the plot and Kate Williams does a good job describing both the banalities and horrors of trench warfare in France. The parents are also affected by the war and Williams makes a point about the supposed "dual allegiances" Germans living in England were accused of.Kate Williams is a good writer and she knows her stuff. The first part of the book is a bit slower than the last 2/3rds and that's why I am giving this book four stars instead of five. I hope that by her second novel in the series she keeps up with her story in inventive ways.

By darklittlelady Kate Williams’ The Storms of War is set during the Great War in England and France and the detailed descriptions of the various settings help you to envision what the war must have been like. While Williams paints a clear picture of the gruesome wartime at the Western Front in France, she doesn’t forget to also write about the state of her settings before and after the war. One of these places is Stoneythorpe Hall, the home of the de Witt family, and I really enjoyed reading about how it changed during the war.In my opinion, this novel is the coming-of-age story of Celia de Witt, our main character. She is the youngest of the de Witt children and after the war breaks out she has to grow up very fast. Child-like, dreamy and naive Celia soon adapts to the harsh reality of the wartime and turns into a practical young woman. Only later in the book, she somehow seems to be out of character for a short while. I could write a lot about the other characters. They all seem to have their own story to tell which isn’t surprising, as this is the first book in a trilogy. When I saw the cover of The Storms of War, I expected light historical/romantic fiction. What I didn’t expect is a novel that is filled with blood and causes so much pain. I was glad it turned out that way. The Storms of War is a well-researched book that I’d recommend to everyone who can stomach a hefty dose of war and its consequences on people’s lives.

By Anissa Annalise I'm so glad I went out of my way to read this one (& by out of my way, I mean bought my copy on AmazonUK months before it was available in the US). I very much enjoyed the story of the de Witts and how they fared during WWI. Celia is the character followed most closely and as she is the youngest in the family, I had moments where watching the family from her perspective reminded me of Atonement (especially in her relationship with Emmeline).I felt great sorrow and true frustration watching Rudolf and Verena as the reality of their situation kept issuing blows but they were still in denial. To be fair, there wasn't anything that they could have done to mitigate their circumstances and there are far worse things than relying on the world being a rational place & your beloved country treating you fairly as a citizen. These things sadly, have failed people, over & over throughout history. Still, it was painful to read. For Rudolf to find that his chosen country considered him a traitor & inter him for the duration must have been heartbreaking. For Verena to have had to register as an alien because of who she married & have what everyone said was sacrosanct, her birth & English lineage, discounted turns the whole sense & justice of the "system" on its head. I of course felt for Michael, Emmeline & Celia in finding out that they weren't English enough & that what mattered was their paternity which happened to be German. But through it all, I liked how each found ways to participate in making the world a better place. I found Emmeline's choices to be most interesting even though her way infuriated me at times. Michael's time in combat was bittersweet and ended on such a tragic note. Celia's various jobs during the war were interesting even if I didn't quite believe she'd have done all that & even had an offer to be a spy. She was consistently naive and no matter her language skills, that would surely not serve her well in an undercover situation. I don't know what to make of Arthur who was mentioned throughout & only showed up at the very end of everything, the war & the book. And then there's Tom. The servant, friend & possible very close relative to the De Witts in general & problematically to Celia in particular. I can only assume that the next book will delve & clear up that little mystery because Tom & Celia don't have the story right & Mrs. Cotton, for some reason hasn't told her son the truth (that I'm assuming was related in the story by Verena's memories). I also hope the next book explores the fate of Hilde & Johann. Having heard about them, I really want to know how they've fared through the war & what it will all mean now for them as they are in Germany.I'm definitely going to read the second book in the series. Highly recommended for historical fiction fans & those interested in fiction of the time in particular.
